Check Engine Light, etc.
« on: May 31, 2016, 12:43:51 PM »

Curious if anyone has ever had this happen to them ...?
2012 CVO Street Glide with 10,000 miles / race tuner and full Rhinehart exhaust. Just purchased used  about two months ago. I have only put approximately 250 miles on it and the other night while riding home my check engine and battery light came on as I'm casually riding maybe 40 miles per hour just traveling down the road. When I would come to a stop at a sign or stoplight the check engine and battery light would go off but when I took off again they would come back on. As I continued to make my way home I also noticed that twice the speedo and tach gauges went un-illuminated and the needles went to zero and then back on again. After about 5 miles down the road everything went back to normal and no more issues. Two days later I went for a long ride of maybe 160 miles with no issues at all except for maybe a slight hesitation in sixth gear at about 65 mph at 2100 rpm. I'm going to check the plugs and replace anyways but think that maybe that could be the hesitation issue. I'm more concerned with the check engine/battery issue. This is my 3rd CVO with the 110 motor and I have never had this problem ...just looking for someone to maybe shed some light on what they think may be going on.

I had this happen on a 2009 road glide. Found a loose connection where the negative wire off the battery grounds to the frame. Hope this helps.

Typical symptoms of voltage regulator going out. Works sometimes then doesn't. I've had three do that. BTW there was a recall on the voltage regulators on the 2012 models.

First check for loose or corroded battery connections (both ends, not just the battery).  If everything is clean and tight, then I suspect exactly what ultrafxr mentioned, a voltage regulator starting to fail.  It was fairly common on the 2012 models and there was a recall, but I've heard of many that weren't within the recall build dates also failing.

Double check battery cable connections of course.  All of them and at each end.  For both clean and tight.  Do that just because it's an easy and free thing to check.  But it sounds like a pretty classic voltage regulator failure.

Wasn't 2012 the year of the regulator recall?

Update: I checked all connections and everything is clean and tight. I called the local HD dealer to ask if they could pull up the records from the vin and it states that there is no outstanding recalls on the bike or ever had a recall performed ...? The person I spoke with is the actual owner of the store and has been around for quite some time and has quite a bit of knowledge and very reputable. I bought the bike from a dealer out of state so that is why he wasn't familiar with the bike personally. He suggested I take the batwing fairing off and check for any loose or frayed connections, etc.
Oddly enough this issue happened on Thursday last week and since then I put maybe 250 miles on the bike and haven't has any problems since.
