Help with the lowers please.
« on: June 06, 2016, 09:12:48 AM »

On the 05 and later bikes, is there a modification to keep the door vents open? Mine keep closing at freeway speeds.

Thanks.

There's a bolt that holds the door up to the lowers, a nylon serrated washer and assorted parts.
on the top side there is a nylon type spacer, washer and lock nut.
You can try to tighten up the bolt and that should do the trick.
Sorry, no pics but you can get the parts breakdown at Ronnies, or other places.
Hope this helps.

I have a 2012 and would like to know how to take apart the lowers correctly.  I an interested in taking out the adjustable vent for the summer to get the best airflow across the motor.

for the best airflow across the motor, shut the vent doors.  if you'd like to get the best airflow for your comfort, take the doors off.  I do this every year during the hot part of the year (in la, that's like mar to oct :D).

to do it, first remove the top cap, 2 x 7/16 nuts on the inside.  if you have a liner, you'll have to pull them out.  with the top cap off, there are 3 torx screws (t20) attaching the glove box to the lower.  take those off, and the glove box and vent door will come off as one unit.  take the nut off at the pivot, and remove the door.  then reinstall the glove box, and top cap and you're done.

I do this with the lowers on the bike, you just have to tilt them back a little so that you can reach the torx screws.

also, you'll notice that there is a 'guide pin' on the glove box that fits into a slot on the vent door.  my vent door had worn a groove into the guide pin so I used a little jb weld to fill that in while I had them off.

Took them apart. Going to trim the doors so they allow more air flow when open. I think I saw a similar modification on this site.

I took mine out and left them out. Nice thing is I don't have to keep checking them as mine would work their way closed while riding. One ride noticed oil temp rose on a steep ride only to see the stupid doors were mostly closed and I had not touched them. Anyway I like the lowers on but without the doors works for me.

Same for me. I considered trimming them but after I took them off I decided to just leave them off. I have no idea how having the doors closed improves airflow over the engine  :nixweiss: I do know having the doors off improves airflow over my legs. Even in cold weather there is plenty of heat from the engine to stay warm.

no oil temp gauge,,, :nixweiss: but i did note the heat on the leg is a lot more comfortable at stops, 99% of the time i have my feet on the pegs while im rolling. to be honest i added the lowers for the look, but use the glove boxes for every thing i need to grab while rolling down the road....cigars, sun block, glasses, air filter sock, readers and gloves. think if and when i get a new bike im gona miss having them lill cubby holes

Lowers?  Vents on the lowers?  Take 'em off and put 'em in the garage!  Look like crap, anyway!  Later--HUBBARD

So I trimmed them, fixed the broken and worn areas with JB Weld and reinstalled them. I tightened down the assembly so they aren't so loose.

When open, it's almost as if they were removed.

When closed it's enough to block most of the rain.
