I've read on other sites where this has been a problem for others.  Sounds like the battery operated light is the way to go.  At the worse case, you'd have some burned out batteries to replace.  Personally, I carry a mini-mag in my tour pak lid organizer that I use if it's that dark and I'm rootin for something.
