Continued electrical problems
« on: October 08, 2004, 09:23:18 AM »

My SEEG was dead again this a.m., apparently changing the security system's battery was not the problem with the bike. So back to the dealer it goes. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Gave me no problems when I rode it two days ago, but no power now....getting very frustrated with this bike as its the third time in on the same problem.

Also, anybody having problems with the lower vents closing by themselves? My left one likes to do that.  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Two common places for grounding shorts on these bikes is within the headlight housing and under the tank.  Hope that helps you to zero in on the problem.

The lower vents were probably not adjusted properly at setup.  Reach in through the lower gloveboxes with a 7/16's or 1/2 deep socket (can't remember the size right now). turn the nut clockwise about a quatrer turn at a time until the doors rotates through the positions with a positive click. When you first turn the nut it may feel like it's trying to spin the carriage bolt, but it is just taking up the slop in the fitting.... [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Installed the 05 lower on my bike and had the same problem with them closing,  tightened the bolt that didn't help.  After watching it for a while I found it was my size 14 boots where the problem.

If you guys are riding an 04 SEEG and you want the air vent in the leg fairings......something to consider.

We all have opinions JCZ, but the Eglide Goodies vents look like they came from K-Mart for a Vacuum cleaner or something. The HD parts on my '05 work well. I rode part of today with them open and back tonite with them closed, no problems. And the big difference is they look like they are part of the bike, not stolen from someones outdated wall unit air conditioner.
Just my opinion.

Of course when your leg is frying in the summertime an expended part from a garbage disposal (or any other device) will seem acceptable if it keeps your thigh from becoming well done and basted.  Having said that I've so far been satisfied with the performance of the vents on the 05.  Hottest day I've been out, however, is only in the mid to high 80s (and that was only an hour or so).  They seem to do ok though.  And I too prefer their appearance to the eglide goodies product.  I've got to admit that even when properly adjusted they "feel" a bit flimsy.  But as long as flying road debris doesn't rend them from the lowers that's a minor thing.

I'm not sure what you've been buying at K-Mart or what kind of vacuum cleaner you have that has anything that even remotely resembles the eGlide Goodies air vent.  You are right, everybody has an opnion and we don't have to agree in our opnions.  However, it appears that you may have taken it a little personal and if you did, I'm sorry.....I sure didn't mean to offend you or anybody.  Again, I apoligize.

I saw the stock vents on the 05 SEEG and in my opnion, they are flimsy in comparison to the original vents from eGlide Goodies (which are steel).  I do think that Harley could have done better with that particular item.  The stock vents do not have the air scoop effect that the eGlide Goodies (and other aftermarket vents) have.  Here in Calif. where it often reaches 110 to 112 degrees (and other hot areas) that air scoop is going to make a difference......again, in my opnion.

Many of us right here on this site run the eGlide Goodies air vent or one of the others.  They were not offered on our bike, stock.  I've not read anything on this site about anybody having a problem with them however, I have read right here in this thread, from more than one person, about the problems that they're having with the stock 05 vents.  In my opnion, Harley could have done a better job with them.

Drilling or cutting on a painted surface on my SEEG is kind of scary.  To make a long question short, can a shade tree mechanic install the eglide air vents?  Any hints on making the job easier. [smiley=nervous.gif]

Gettinold was sharing a few tips on installation of these vents at the Smokies gathering.  If he reads this, perhaps he can share.  He's done two sets.

The final word was: the tour pak's light was coming on and off intermittently when the trunk was closed...they found it by accident because it wouldn't do it all the time....and that was enough to drain the battery over several days. Hopefully problem solved now. [smiley=beerchug.gif]
