Knocking noise at 2200 and up.
« on: June 09, 2016, 11:03:27 PM »

Hi Guys
Since I've had my 2015 CVO road glide I have had a knocking noise come from the engine or drivetrain.
I also had a bad vibration at 3000. Harley finally agreed to replace my crank because of excessive run out.
They installed a new crank with less than .001 run out but I still have a low thumping knock somewhere in the powertrain at 2200 and up, really loud on deceleration.
The dealer has no clue what is making the noise. Anyone have a similar noise that they solved?

Did they replace anything other than the crank? Has the compensator been checked? Lifters?

Does it make that noise sitting still and just revving the engine with no load?  If it does, tell your dealer to invest in a simple mechanics stethoscope and start listening to various components until they narrow it down.  In other words, they need to do some basic diagnostics and not just stand around waiting for divine intervention.  It's unlikely anyone is going to send them a message telling them to replace item Z.

There are a multitude of possible causes of a knocking noise, and they aren't all engine related.  Unless they narrow it down to a specific area first, odds are they will never find it.

Did they check your cylinders when they replaced the crank?   Could be piston slap.

Are you sure the noise isn't reversion noise coming from the open air filter??
Depending on the exhaust on the bike, this can be quite noisy and often sounds like a knock,
I know my '15 CVO RGU is noisy.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I will try and address your thoughts.
When they replaced the crank they put in all new bearing, gaskets seals. Honed the cylinders and installed new rings but they would not pay for new pistons although there were some scuff marks on the skirts.

They used the original cam plate and oil pump. The first crank was wearing on the cam plate bushing but they said it was within spec.

I had them put in the new screaming eagle lifters and push rods just to stay with Harley parts.

The compensator was changed about 100 miles before the engine was torn down.

The exhaust is stock.

I know the open breather can make a noise similar to a knock on acceleration but its not what I'm hearing.

The knock is very quiet when the engine is cold. As it warms up it gets louder and louder.

After riding it a few hundred miles the noise is getting louder and you can feel it knocking

It has the neutral rattle that most 2014/2015 have but that's not it.

It will knock sitting when the rpm reaches 2000 rpm with the clutch in or out in neutral or in gear.

It will knock when driving when it goes over 2000 rpm.

I thought the sound had to be coming from the compensator or the clutch but the dealer pulled the side cover and put 2 shims in the compensator and it changed nothing. The more I drive it I think the knock is coming from the engine.

The tech that did the work is meticulous so I didn't think it was possible the noise could be in the engine after the new crank was put in but I really think it might be.

Anymore thoughts guys?

I may try and post a video so you can hear the noise.

Hopefully they actually checked that new crank before installing it.

Btw, take a look at this thread and see if perhaps your noise is similar to what ACfixer just went through.  He has a video posted that illustrates his noise issue, and it was the trans causing it.

I checked out the link for the bike with the rattle nope that's not it.
Mine makes that noise as well! they put shims in the compensator to stop it from rattling then it induces a rattle in the trans that the dealers here refer to as a neutral rattle and say they all do that.
The noise is a low thumping noise. If it were in an automobile engine I would say the main or rod bearings are bad.

So, what does Harley have to say about the latest problems?  Are they ready to step up and replace the entire engine yet, or is this new knocking also "normal"?  Hopefully you have contacted H-D directly, as well as an attorney.  This is BS.

In the past when checking for a thumping / knocking noise from an engine during deceleration in a car, we would  remove a plug wire for the suspected cylinder to see if the noise changed. If the noise did change / soften, then the most likely cause was from the piston, either a wrist pin or broken skirt.
Maybe stop by an indy shop to see if they can give a listen.

You read my mind wingman.
I was just going to post just for the heck of it I took it to an independent shop owned by a guy that worked for Harley for about 20 years.
He listened to it then took it for a ride. When he got back he just laughed and said I don't know where to start. He said it has valve train noise, a noisy compensator, a horrible rattle in the trans, and a knocking noise in the engine that he could feel in the handle bars from 2200 to 5500.
He said he would start by fixing the noise in the trans and the compensator first then maybe the engine noise could be pin pointed.
I have been driving the crap out of it and the noise is getting louder so it will blow or it will be easier to find the noise.

So we still have the same situation many of us faced ten to twenty years ago.  Bike is in warranty, bike is defective, Harley won't fix it, so we spend our money to fix it either ourselves or with a good independent tech.  And people wonder why I won't buy another Harley and why I badmouth them.  DUH!
