Is the download worth on my 15 CVO? and lowering input.
« on: June 12, 2016, 05:07:37 PM »

I am taking my 15 CVO RG Ultra in for its 5k maintnace,I am thinking of doing the stage one download.

Is it worth it and with the CVO air box its all good?

I had my 14 Fatbob done with the download and dyno'd and really notice the difference,my 15 RG I just did the down load,no dyno,I didnt really know if there was a  difference because they did it before I took delivery....It did run good and there was no popping....

So does it wake it up a bit or is it a waste of money?

I am also doing the quick detach trunk, adding a stock 2015 seat and would like to lower the back end a bit,I am not really a trunk guy and would like it to look a little more hot rod'ish...

Thanks for any input.

You don't say what they're charging you for this stage 1 download it so it is impossible to say weather it's  a waste of money.  In terms of the best bang for your buck, I would consider a Fullsac Stage 1 Kit.  That will wake up your motor a lot.

If you look through the Road Glide Ultra section, you will find a couple of threads on removing the tour pack and installing a quick detach kit. I would not recommend lowering the rear.  You might want to look in the suspension section.

The download is $250.00

The dealer  are doing the quick detach, not using the kit, piecing it together....no need for the lights and I am no mechanic.

I'm not exactly certain what that dealership is selling you for $250.  Harley no longer sells the old Stage I Race calibrations that used to cost around $150, since they are illegal.  Any legal downloads they have these days are for the EPA approved kits they sell, like big bore kits, higher flow air cleaners, etc., and those don't affect the operating range of the bike that's covered by the emission regs.  In other words, you still have the closed loop engine management system controlling the fuel mixture at the legal settings for most normal riding conditions, and the only thing that changes with a download is the mixture for higher throttle and load conditions, like hard acceleration.  If you really aren't changing the amount of air flowing through the engine, those downloads just make the bike run too rich in open loop mode.  Are you actually having a stage kit installed, or just having a download installed?  IMHO, if you aren't changing the exhaust and intake to allow more flow, the download is a waste of money.  You'd be much better off to have the bike properly tuned by a fully competent pro.  It will cost more, but at least you'll get something that is right for how your bike is actually set up.

Btw, a CVO is already considered Stage I right out of the crate, since they come stock with higher flow air cleaners and mufflers compared to regular production models.

thanks, that is what I was wondering. My fatbob and RG I did the stage one air box and they did a download. It changed my fatbob quite a bit,but with this coming with the air box  already I was wondering if it would do anything....I am by no means a mechanic....

I guess there will be money better spent on something different.

Magoo you need to have the dealer who is charging you this $250 show/explain what they are downloading. Sounds like you are just taking there word and paying them. HD no longer sells the download that cost around $150, so what are they selling you? The CVO air filter does qualify as a "Stage 1" and will flow all the air you ever need.
Please take the time, possibly have a buddy who does understand, go with you to the dealer and ask questions until you understand. If they try to talk over your head or hesitate to take the time to make you understand, go somewhere else.
For $250 they are not selling and doing dyno time on a Race Tuner, TTS or even a PCV so just what are they doing. You do not have to be a mechanic to have someone explain it to you, in terms that would make sense.

Magoo, I have the same bike. My opinion is either let it be as it is, or do it complete like the Fullsac stage 1 mentioned above. Nothing the dealer is going to sell you for $250 is going to do squat, certainly nothing you're going to notice. So to answering your question I'd say no, it's not worth it. If you want some bolt-on/MAP performance it will set you back around $1,500 and IMO that IS worth it.

Blasphemy!  :P

In all seriousness, it's hard to really argue with that logic. The guy I ride with most often has a '15 Ultra with a bone stock 103, we get wherever we're going at the same time. He doesn't seem to be affected by upgrade-itis and I have to tell you I'm kind of envious of how content he is.  ;)

Hey, I've got a '14 Limited with some old Rush 2" slip-ons and nothing more.  I'm almost upset that it's so close to where it needs to be that I can't justify spending another grand for exhaust and tuning interface...

I've got the'14 Limited and other than the Fullsac "stage 1map, exhaust, intake" it's stock.
Runs so nice I'm not going to fool with it.

A little off topic but I just did a 103 kit for a customer on his 09 Ultra .. He had 69,000 miles on the 96 incher , stock head pipe FM slip on mufflers and had been running a woods 555 cam in the 96.  4 years + years ago  I guess,.. he had FM install the 555 cam and the PC with auto tune..  To say the bike lacked low end power was a under statement .  All I did was do a 103 kit , and re tuned with a TTS  made 97 /110 a bit late on the tq curve .  He is blown away at the new power  :D :D     Yes It is very cool when you meet the guy that is just happy ...
