Harman Kardon CVO Radio system
« on: June 14, 2016, 01:15:24 AM »

Recently my radio just cuts out and there's no sound, although power is still to the unit, channels can be changed and IPod selected, but no sound. The next time I start the bike the radio will kick into life after 5, 10 or even 30 minutes off it goes again until I stop for a while and restart the bike. Has anyone experience this before and found the solution? I live in a country where there is no Harman Kardon repair centres.

Any chance that your CB is turned on and the squelch is set to low so it cuts out the radio?

Another weak link that would present itself is failure in the dash-mounted speaker selection switch.  Try toggling it back and forth during an episode.

Sounds a lot like the classic problem of vibration causing the circuit board in the head unit to crack, damaging the electical traces on the board. I know you stated that you live where there is no repair facilities, but maybe you could contact Iron Cross located here in the U.S. about repairs or replacement.

One thing that might cause the issue that you can do is check your software version of the head unit. The directions should be in your owners manual and are also on HD's website. It might be as easy as updating the software version. Those instructions are also on the HD website.

Mine started last year in Sturgis, the volume started to increase and decrease, and the dealer could not find anything wrong, this week, the XM music would play 5, 10 and sometimes 20 min and then no sound. I just powered off and on the radio and music played for 5, 10 and sometimes 30min.Dropped it off at the dealer yesterday they think it could be a combo amp and radio checking out. I'll keep you posted on the fix. This is in a 2011 CVO SG, never had a problem in the past, and I also have the rear saddlebag speakers add in.... Curtis

I moved my amp to the side of my bike last winter when i did the quick release tourpak kit
Twice this summer the stereo lost all output. No matter what the source. Display on head unit worked fine.
if I pull over and turn the bike off and restart it will play fine
Ill try the rear speaker switch when it does it again

Curious if its the amp or the head unit. I need an excuse to redo the whole system
keep us posted

Well Its losing audio on a ride yesterday
If I hit the rear speaker toggle switch, audio come back on, flip it again and audio stays.
Did this twice yesterday
Looks like I need to pull that cover and inspect the switch, had it apart over the winter when I put the bars on

I recently experienced same issue. Took bike in to dealer who said they have seen alot of same issue. They replaced stereo under extended warranty. Once I got it home and startEd adjusting settings, I'm finding the controls stick and unit is difficult to set up due to the controls sticking.

Call Tony at Iron Cross Audio, http://www.ironcrossaudio.com/  As The boards in these radios go away they do funny things, my last one would play through the headset only. The base plate on the radio gets banged around off of the risers and they came out with shorter riser bolts to eliminate that.  They do some outstanding  work on the HK's

Hate to say that once you run into cracked board issues, even if you sent it in for repair, it's just going to keep coming back. I've had mine in to our favorite radio guy three times for the same thing, and I finally gave up on that one. Last repair lasted a few weeks.

Where as that situation may be true in your case, to make an all encompassing assumption like that is a bit out of left field.

Since 2005, we have less than a 2% return rate of all the radios we repair for as long as they've been repaired.

As long as our customers understand the issue ( and it's explained both by our office during billing, on the radio, and on the invoice ), and the customer addressed all the bike related issues that are pointed out, as well as use some common sense, the defect rarely returns. If the cause of the defect is not addressed, then yes, it will be a reoccurring problem.

To say that a repaired board will just keep coming back is clearly a belief made without any knowledge of multi-layer circuit boards or our repair process.
