Nothing sounds like an old Harley
« on: June 19, 2016, 09:59:30 AM »

I pulled in to get gas yesterday and was opposite side of the pump from a guy on an early 90's Electra-Glide Classic. It was a little dirty, definitely a riders bike. He fired it up to leave and wow did it sound great. It was probably idling about 500-600 rpm. It had an S&S carb on it. I just love the sound of those old Harley! The twin cams just don't make that sound.

To me, there's no sweeter sounding Motor than a Shovel-Head with 2" Drag Pipes, from about 3500 on!  I'm gonna' build me another Shovel before I leave this Ol' world.  Good Lord willin', of course.  It's on my Bucket List.  Some time shortly after my baby daughter gets out of WVU.  I can't believe she'll be a Junior in August!  Later--HUBBARD

I'm with you Hubbard in wanting to own and build a shovel before time runs out.
I'm wanting to get one and have it as a project bike for me and my grandson to tinker with and for him to ride.

Man, I wish I could start that project today!  The last one I had was a '73 Super Glide.  Tilley built a Stroker for me, and we converted it to belt drive, Primary too, and I can't remember the year-model Tranny (4-sp.), we put in it. Seems like the original tranny was geared so low, you never had to down-shift.  80MPH was about it, and rattle your teeth out!  Kick, and Electric start.  Ran pretty good, for a Shovel, after Tilley got through with it.  And oh, it would absolutely "beller", when you got on it.  I've got a picture of it somewhere.  I'll see if I can find it tonite.  Later--HUBBARD

I just happen to have one for sale...

These pics were taken late last fall.

I know it's not a FX or some sporty Shovelhead, but it is a '76 shovel that is a blast to ride.  It's all stock bore at 74", original carb with true duals.

I have a late model Road King quick release windshield setup on the nacelle, very clean installation.

This is a pic of the wife and I back in '05.  I had finished the bike in April and this was an outing with a bunch of friends while waiting for
the ferry to IL.

Notice the later pics have an emblem from the late '60s and the pic above has a decal under the clearcoat.  Last summer the left tank started to blister the paint right under the center of the left decal.  I was a pin hole from 10 years previous that had just started to leak under the paint.  I used '92 FXR red bike tank decals and they went obsolete in '07.  I was able to find right side decals on eBay for $100, but now lefts to be found.  So I repaired the tank myself and had the original painter redo the paint work late last summer/fall.  I went with the retro emblem as they can be removed if one does not like the looks.  I personally think they match all the red pin stripes very well.

Okay, you guys are not going to be interested as you both of would be looking for project bikes, but hey, maybe it will get your juices flowing to get started on the project while you still can.

Have a great week.

Old?  I just aged 20 years with those comments.... ;D

Actually, there ain't nuttin like the sound of a late 60's sportster tuned "jus' rite" or a Panhead on idle hitting a lick every 5 seconds or so (so it seems).... :2vrolijk_21:

Used to run a '79 Low Rider that had a set of Harley shotgun duels from their catalog. Believe these pipes might have been the stock pipes several years earlier. Best sounding motorcycle I've ever owned. My '99 Evo softail has a set of Python shotgun duels that sounds pretty nice.      JoeS

This will probably get bumped or moved to third party, but if anyone looking for shovelhead stuff, here's an '82 FXR that looks okay.

Found it!  This is one of the 2 Shovels I've owned.  This one is a '73, the other one was a '76 Super-Glide, I bought New in Va. Beach, back in the day, at Witchduck Harley-Davidson, I think that was the Stealer's name.  Don't remember.  Anyway, it was a piece of chit.  AMF junk.  Tilley built the Motor in this '73.  Ran pretty good.  Sorry it's on pdf, but that's all I could do.  Later--HUBBARD
