Street and Road glide vs Ultra
« on: June 22, 2016, 11:14:11 AM »

Have owned 3 different CVO's but never an Ultra in a bat or shark wing configuration. Current is a 09 CVO RG. Was wondering on longer rides what the real comfort level difference is? Longer rides on the SG and RG tend to beat me up at my age. Would like  some input from guys that own and ride both. I'm thinking about going to an Ultra.

Maybe it's just me but that seems like a very open ended question and there are very many variables. If you get 100 answers you will get 100 varied responses that may or may not work for you. Comfort is a very individual thing.
Not sure you couldn't just take a SG or RG and turn them into an Ultra with upgraded windshield, lowers, cushier seat, better suspension and a Tourpak. That is assuming you are still happy with the bikes you own and don't need the latest bells and whistles etc.....
Good luck with your decision.

Mike,

You know I loved my SERG3, especially the look.  I spent a small fortune on it.  The comfort level of the Rushmore Ultras trump any perceived lack of cool.  Suspension and handling are more comfortable and the wind management is much better.

As for the Shark v. Bat  question, there is no contest anymore.  I spent a day riding the '15 Ultra CVO's in March of' 15.   I stand by this review:  Re: 2015 RGU: I'm Blue... So Blue...   It was Simon that persuaded me to look at the '15 instead of repairing my' 09 telling me how much better it handled and how comfortable it was. He was right! Of course, he is now riding a BMW.    :huepfenlol2:

I know you guys are right, but I guess I'm looking at a 15 CVOSG or a CVORG and I'm sure the RG will ride better just wondering how much better. I know the SG is considered a hotrod and the CVORG is a cruiser.

Well, I've had never owned nor had ever wanted a Road Glide.  All of mine have been bat-winged creatures of some sort since my first purchase of my 1989 EG classic.  Loved 'em, have rode 'em all over this great country for the past 30 plus years and was never going to a fixed faring/RG style motorcycle.

That is until I rode a '15 SERGU this past July 2015.  I wasn't going to trade my "12 SESG because I already had it prepped and ready for all day/week long trips.....that is until I rode a '15 SERGU this past July 2015.

That ride sold me on a few things.  First off, I'm a fan of the new sound system (bugs and all).  I like the increased size of the front forks (it does ride and handle much better than previous stock units offered by the MoCo).  I'm still not sold on the linked brakes because I like the option of doing it all on my own...but they are growing on me and don't link below a certain speed.  The re-designed faring is a much better improvement over the old design in both operation and looks (the looks comment is subjective...it looks better to me but may not to others).  The wind control is great for the rider but the passenger seems to get more side wind (nothing a good aftermarket Freedom or Clearview shield can't fix...the Clearview worked for me and Vickie).  I have put almost 10K miles on it over the Fall/Winter and partial Spring and could not be happier with the decision to trade for and move to the RG.

All day comfort can be had by any bike depending on your definition of the term and the mods/money you are willing to throw at it to make it that for you.  This SERGU is basically all day comfort ready right off the bat (sorry, shark...).

Good luck with your decision, Mike.

I just like my Headlites to follow the Handlebars!  I'm Bat-Wing to the bone, Lew.  I've ridden RG's, and I just don't like the way they look.  Guess I'm old school, and like the traditional look of a Dresser.  RG's will always be Tour-Glides, to me.  Lol.  There is an aerodynamic advantage with the Tour-Glide.  A Bat-Wing starts to lift at about 130MPH, the Tour-Glide does not.  Sorta' cuts the air better.  But me, I like to feel that lift every now and again.  When I do, I know I'm flat haulin' a$$!  Later--HUBBARD

I understand, my body is revolting these days on the modified CVORG. Just wondering if the new SG would help or do I need a true ultra? By the way I thought we were going to hook up for breakfast or lunch one SAT?

JC gave up riding because his SG hurt his back so much. He is now very happy on his Ultra.

As do I Hub <g>... I traded a late model RGU (non-CVO) for my 2013 bat-wing, which I like better by personal preference. I think a lot has to do with your size/reach and riding position. I like the controls/fairing closer to me, which I recognize many riders actually complain about, preferring the stretched feel of the RG. You can sure tell the difference between the two with the weight of a bat-wing fairing on the front end though, which must have an impact on handling. I like the look of the RG's and recognize they are excellent - but don't think I'll be trading anytime soon. And I'll have to get back to you on +130 MPH lift comment Hubbard - LOL...
