Turn my 2015 CVO Street Glide into full blown custom?
« on: June 22, 2016, 07:15:53 PM »

I really do love my 2015 CVO Stret Glide.....but I've really been interested in doing a full blown custom build....26" front wheel, stretched tank....the works!  The guy that I would probably have do it says that my bike is a perfect foundation to build one, but I'm not sure.  2 bikes is out of the question...and, I'm not so sure I should chop up this bike.....if I do decide to go this route.

What do you guys think?

IMHO,  that's a lot of $$ to start cutting up. There are 2 Very Tasteful big wheel bikes on here, I don't like most, but these two are SHARP. taking it beyond what these two have done and you're not really a CVO anymore and you've spent a ton of cash to remove or replace what you've paid for... just my $0.02

You're not sure if it's a good foundation, or not sure you want to destroy a CVOSG?  IMO, I'd rather use a non-CVO to make a custom, but most of us here have a CVO on hand, so it's easier to use it than to sell it and find a non-CVO to modify.  OTOH, a 2015 is pretty new to chop up...but it's your money.

In the end, it comes down to what you want to have and to do:  Do you want a trailer queen showbike, or do you want a good-looking bike you can ride all over?

Its your bike.....If wouldn't take my CVO an make it a custom. Would rather start with a base model. But if that's what you want...then go for it. Got a friend that Customized his 2010 CVO SG, but it had been in an accident. They decided to go custom instead of stock. Still waiting on paint, its been over 6 months. Have seen artist renderings, should look good, but man what a process. It will almost be a year when he gets it back.

The bike you've got now you really love.  I know this because I just read it on the Internet.  If you heavily customize it it won't be that bike anymore.  So if you don't really love it enough to keep it after all you have to at least consider selling it while you can still get as much as you ever will for it and finding a much less expensive donor bike to do a heavy customization too.

As for the builder suggesting it's a perfect platform to start from; well....   anything setting in front of him might be a perfect platform to start from.  After all, any other answer just makes potential work farther away.

Find yourself a cheap wrecked bike and use that as your foundation. That way you've still got a bike to ride while you build your custom.

If you can't have 2 bikes then sell the CVO , buy an inexpensive used bike and build on it.

I did a custom on a 2009 FLTR.

I also did a custom CVO. It didn't help or hurt value when I sold it.

Good luck

You have a shorter than normal attention span for bikes.  I don't think you love the SESG as much as you say or you wouldn't consider chopping or selling it.  Moving it as-is and starting over with a non-CVO would make the most sense.  But, we're not you.

I do really like this bike!  That's why I'm wondering IF I were to do a full custom, would I like it more, or is it a waste to cut up a $40k bike.  I own it, so I'm just thinking out loud.....

I'd do what everyone else above has suggested and maybe spend the savings on a S&S 124 motor. JMO

It all depends on how much money you want to lose.  The big wheel bagger thing will pass just like the chopper thing did.  You can pick up those 60K chopper types for pennies on the dollar.  When in doubt...LEAVE IT STOCK...but then it is your bike.  Do what makes you smile.  Doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.  Bottom line.  Good luck.

You're gonna put the same money into the build, so why not get as much as you can out of this one and start with a less expensive bike and put the same amount into the build.

I would not cut up the CVO, I would find a "salvage" SG and make it anything you want.  You see, if you buy a salvage and fix it up, it isn't valued the same and a non salvage. If you are building a full blown custom, you aren't going to get the money out of it in the end anyways.  The CVO, although loses value over they years, it still retains a premium over standard models.

Take the 110 out, and build you a 124, from the ground up.  Then you've still got the Bike you love, with a Big Motor.  Best of 2 Worlds.  Later--HUBBARD
