Modified my Fullsac Mufflers
« on: June 28, 2016, 12:03:35 AM »

I had to switch out my Rineharts for my stock CVO cans with Fullsac 2" cores after my 113 build. Wasn't thrilled about that, because I love the idle sound of the Rineharts, plus I loved the look of my Performance Machine Tech 10 tips- by far the nicest looking exhaust tips IMO.

I was getting O2 sensor errors then noticed my rear cylinder muffler was loose. The last mechanic that put them on re-used my torca clamps which are supposed to be a one time use. I had to tighten it way past the recommended torque value to get it tight. An exhaust leak is a common cause of the O2 errors apparently.

Went and got new torca clamps today. Since the mufflers were off, I decided to take out the OEM screens and baffle wrap to give me more sound. Good thing I did- the baffle material was disintegrating, and half of it was stuck to the inner wall. I got a long handled BBQ brush and scraped it clean as best I could.

I then tried fitting the PM tips to the stock cans. To make it fit, I would have to mill a bit of the lip to centre to top screw hole, and have 2 more threaded holes drilled to match the holes on the muffler. Since the wife works at a machine shop, she took them to work today to get it done. Her boss didn't want to mill the edge of the tip as he thought it might damage the paint on the tips, so I ended up using a button head screw and washer for the top hole, and re-used the nice OEM flush screws on the bottom and side.

Put them back on with the new clamps, and the Fullsac's sound much better to me. Almost the volume and tone of the Rineharts (especially when comparing the Rineharts on when I was a 110 vs the quieter Fullsacs on the 113 with headwork), and they really have the same quality of sound as the Rineharts which makes sense since they have both spiral louvered cores.

Between a new TTS map that my tuner sent me, and the properly sealing mufflers, I don't have any error codes after a short ride tonight which included some full throttle runs. Fingers crossed that problem is solved.

Long post, but I'm pleased with the simple changes I made to my mufflers.

Oh yeah, I know.......

I rode behind my bike today as my mechanic was driving it home for me. I tell you, removing the baffle wrap really changed the sound of these. It sounded great as I rode behind it- plenty of volume, and as I mentioned, the idle sounds much meaner.

If anyone has the Fullsac 2" cores and also think they are a bit too quiet, definitely take the wrap out before changing out mufflers.

You guys want more?
You can always go to bigger cores and/or have custom cores made, and true duals, etc etc.
The possibilities are endless!

As you know bigger cores  kill the low end torque. Thats why I had to lose the Rineharts. I made the most out of what I have to use for good performance.

Do the Rineharts have any packing in them?  What does it sound like at a steady cruise?  Any droning?

No packing. No droning to me. Like most, I find the sound smooths right out at highway speed.

I find the Reinharts to be way to loud. I also find the Fulsac's 1.75 & 2.0 Baffles with the packing and the screens the best sounding cans out there. I have heard a set of stock cans without any fiberglas and the 2.0 baffles and it just sounded loud and noisy. Also the guys cans were turning colors, kind of a brown.
I had the Fulsac's on my SERG without the screens but I went to local Boat surplus store and bought fiberglas and wrapped the cores and secured with ss ties.
Either way, screens or packing alone, the fiberglas asborbs and takes the vibration of waves out and decreases the resonance from the cans making, to me, a much better sound.
IMHO.

I think I might give North Star's recommendation a try.  I'm in the camp that prefers the Rinehart's sound, but the Fullsac's performance.  Easy enough to reverse later if I find I don't like the result.  It would be interesting to hear Fullsac's comments about any performance differences with/without packing and screens.

Exactly, and you are the type of guy I am making the suggestion to. I know some think the 2" or even 1.75" with wrap is too loud. No problem, everyone is different, but some of us want the character and snarl of a bit more aggressive exhaust- not obnoxious, just a bit more of a Harley sound with some attitude.

The wrap material in there was clearly the OEM, as it was disintegrating, so it was good to remove it. The 2009 came with the OEM screens, and I also have a set of Fullsac screens plus thin Dynamat baffle material, so easy enough to go back if I ever want.

I will say it's not quite as deep as the Rineharts, but I wouldn't call it high pitched or tinny by any means.
