That is the single most untenable "service" request I have ever heard.  Furthermore, it's not completely out of the local shop's hands.  After all, in a worst case they can eat the cost themselves to show some loyalty for your being willing to buy the bike from them to begin with.

I spent about a thousand bucks more to buy it here than I could have at two other shops I spoke with.  Sales tried to explain that it wasn't really "marked up" above MSRP but  the explanations of the associated costs were thin at best.

That was ok though, I'd decided I wished to support my local shop.  As did you.  That kid of loyalty needs to go both ways though.  You might perhaps let them know that if they don't go to bat for you heavily that other owners besides yourself will be more than a little concerned.  It's the single most expensive bike they sell.  And you bought it from them.  In and of itself that fact alone should suggest some willingness to say more than "it's out of my hands."

Actually suggesting that an owner need be without a vehicle for up to 12 weeks just so the manufacturer can decide how it's going to treat that owner.....   Completely and utterly preposterous.  On top of that it is simply stupid, more than annoying, and a little frightening.  In fact if you'd like to Mike print this out and let the local shop know that your not the only local owner concerned about their decision making in this process.

Thought I'd heard about everything one could hear over a service counter, until this.

I could agree with you except when I talk of similar things happening, mobe, it seems that I get blasted by some of the others on this site because I have received similar treatment from dealers and the MoCo.

Sounds like it's waaaay overdue to turn the heat up on the dealer.  I would suggest that you ask the owner when the next HD District Manager evaluation is coming up and arrange a meeting with him.  Knowing the politics quite well on the workings of HD dealerships, I can tell you with some certainty that the local deaker does not really want you to head down that road.  Good luck.  Certainly agree with you 2lane.  Ridiculous.

Just my two cents worth, past experience says, its mostly the dealers fault for you having so much trouble with warranty claims issues. The dealer doesn't want to take of and replace the tank several times as this takes money out of his pocket, because HD isn't going to reimbuse them for changing the tank that often . As to the factories stance also with past experience, they want a happy customer and will go out of there way to make it so. I've had warranty work done on bikes out of warranty for time but under mileage when it was obviously a factory issue. My V-rod had to powder coating lifting of the heads over a year out of date for warranty work but only 5000 miles and they replaced both heads without question. Like I said just my two cents worth but a Great dealer will make a great motorcycle, but  a poor or only fair dealer can make a great motorcycle a poor one.

Well it seems that they have miraculously found the first tank that came off of the bike. I am now waiting for the service manager to call me back and make an appointment to reinstall that one so that they can send in tank number 2 for repair/replacement. The dealer told me that the 1st tank is a HD warranty issue but the second tank is an issue with the vendor that supplies painted parts to HD.
To be honest I don't really want a "repaired tank", I didn't buy a used motorcycle. I bought a new one. I think I should get a new tank.
I think that I'll probably be having another talk with the dealer about this.... [smiley=furious.gif]

There is Strength In Numbers...Let your "Noise" be heard directly to the MotoCo...without that "Noise", you can bet little will be done to address these issues.

Not an be a provoker, however without the knowledge there is no power...as owners, let's empower ourselves and improve the company at the same time.

Got an e-mail from the local service manager, and a call from the owner today. It seems that they have finally seen the light. They have decided to send back tank #1, thus saving me the hassle, (and them the labor expense), of two more tank removal and installations. They also stated that they have contacted the regional service rep. to try to get this issue resolved as soon as possible.......

The latter may be good news.  Having said that; it is still completely unacceptable that a service manager would ever suggest to a new vehicle owner that because of a product problem you should consider being without said vehicle for as long as three months.

More to pity is that it is a problem that they saw first, mentioned to you, and in fact recognized as a problem.  It's just not a question that service should ever ask of an owner.

Any and all options should have been explored (even including those options that had to come out of pocket for the dealership) before ever approaching the vehicle owner.  Again, dealership/owner loyalty and respect is a two way street.  Simply not thinking through the consequences of the suggestion does not excuse ever suggesting to a new owner of the most expensive stock vehicle they sell that an owner should ever have to consider being without for up to a quarter of a year because of any kind of a product problem.

Addressing the issue after the fact is ok.  It does not, however, excuse making the suggestion to begin with.  Especially from a service department with a questionable history to begin with.  The entire unfortunate scenario should have been avoided.  It's the kind of thing that certainly doesn't add to the comfort level one might feel for a shop.

UPDATE ON MY 05 SEEG TANK AND FENDER.
WELL I HEARD FROM MY DEALER TODAY. MY TANK AND FENDER ARE SUPPOSED TO SHIP THIS WEEK. APPARENTLY THE DISTRICT REP CONTACTED CALIBER, (THE PAINT SUBCONTRACTOR FOR HD), AND MY TANK AND FENDER WERE JUST SITTING ON A SHELF. NO NEW ONES WERE PAINTED, NO REPAIRS WERE MADE.
MY DEALER WAS TOLD THAT THEY DID NOT FOLLOW PROPER PROCEDURE BY ORDERING A NEW TANK AND FENDER, AND THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE SENT THE ORIGINAL SET IN AND WAITED FOR A RESPONSE. MY DEALER INFORMED THE MOCO THAT IF HE HAD DONE THAT, MY BIKE WOULD HAVE FALLEN UNDER THE LEMON LAW AND THEY WOULD BE BUYING IT BACK. (MY BIKE WAS PURCHASED ON 8/22/04).
I GUESS THIS IS HOW THE PAINT WORKS; CALIBER DESIGNS THE SEEG PAINT, HD IN YORK, PENNSYLVANIA ACTUALLY PAINTS THE PARTS IN HOUSE AND ASSEMBLES THE BIKES, THEN IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE PAINT THE PARTS ARE SHIPPED TO CALIBER AND THEY DECIDE IF THEY ARE GOING TO REPAIR OR REPLACE.
MY FIRST REPLACEMENT FENDER AND TANK WERE PULLED OFF THE SHELF IN YORK, SO THATS HOW I RECEIVED THEM SO QUICKLY. UNFORTUNATLY, THEY WERE ALSO FLAWED, (DIRT IN THE CLEARCOAT ON THE TANK AND A RUN IN THE FENDER).
WHAT MY DEALER TOLD ME IS THAT THE S@#$ HIT THE FAN, AND I SHOULD BE GETTING A PHONE CALL FROM THE MOCO APOLOGIZING FOR THE F#$@ UP.  WE'LL SEE.

mobe, please keep us posted on this.  I would like to know if you actually get an apology.  They seem to be too far and few between for the MoCo.
