SE springs required for 585 cams?
« on: July 05, 2016, 04:33:52 PM »

I'm contemplating a cam upgrade to my 2015 RGU.  I have the D&D Fat Cat 2:1 and TTS tuner and scheduled a full tune on the dyno, but the tech felt I was wasting money on the tune if I didn't take advantage of a better cam for the new exhaust.  He recommended changing out the stock 255 cams for the SE 585.  Do any of you know whether I'd need new SE springs to go along with the higher lift SE 585 or are they already stock in the SE 110 engine?

Also glad to hear other opinions on the upgrade.  (No, I'm not ready for the 117 kit... ;D)

Thanks in advance,

Lprez

I used AV&V 600 springs for my 117" Pro Race kit.

You can use your stock springs!

I was changing out my stock lifters, push rods, and cam bearings, so I opted to change out the cam to the SE 585 with a 4 degree advance.  I did not want to lose any of the down low torque that the 255's offer, therefore the advance key. I think it came out very well, with nothing lost at the bottom and the bike runs stronger across the board, with less heat associated with the (EPA) 255's.

Some of the tuners suggested that the cam will perform better with a little more compression, but my plan was just to keep what I had at the bottom, while shoring up the weak points (lifters & bearings) of my otherwise stock CVO.

I have had Woods cams and this cam is noisy like the Woods cams, if that is a concern.  They're advertised as quiet ramp design :earmuffs:, in theory at least. ;D  The exhaust sound is better than with the 255's.  The "School Bus" 255's are very good torque cams imo.

Modest gains with the SE 585 (+9hp & +1tq), but better performance that I can really feel and use.  Perfect for what I was looking for.

Depending on what you're looking for, there are better stand alone cams for the 110, and/or add a little compression.

Kingspoke,
Thanks for the information and the dyne sheet.  I'm assuming you left the stock springs in but changed out the lifters, push rods, and cam bearings.  The torque curve for the 255 is exactly what I was trying to describe to the tech.  It feels like the bike "tops out" before it hits 3500 rpm.  Beyond that, just higher RPMs and noise.  Ideally I'd like to shift that peak 1000 RPMs to the right.

Is the 4 degree advance achieved via an extra part or is this up to the tech?  The chart looks like both cams gave you the desired low end. Any idea how the chart would look at higher RPMs without the advance?  I am intrigued by the sound and heat improvement.

What other stand alone cams might be better than a 585?

Thanks,

Lprez

stock bee hive springs are good to .600",that said,if you going to be seeing high RPM`s,ide look into some AV&V springs

Yes, I kept my stock springs as Prodrag affirms, you are good with the .584 lift on the SE 585's.  You are correct that the 255's begin their descent as early as 3500rpms.  That is why the modest gains in hp & tq are really significant in that I maintained the torque where the 255's are falling off and my hp is continuing to climb.

The Andrews sprocket (advance key) is a $50 dollar add on.  That is a good point about removing the advance key to see how it affects the right side of the chart.  I'm sure one of these tuners/builders will chime in on that aspect.

Here's a 103 with dual exhaust.  Your's will sound better (imo) with the 2-1 & 110 motor.

The heat (my bike never really ran hot, like my 103 did but it's all relative to large displacement vtwin motors), I feel is from my rear exhaust not the engine running hot, so I can say I feel less heat, but a non EPA cam should be better for the engine in that regard.

A good pipe, tuner (TTS), & tune, really brings the 110 ci alive!  The stock heads are very good as is the stock breather.

That information is very helpful, all.  I'm gonna give it a go with the 585, D&D Fat Cat, TTS, and a good tune.   I'll post results as soon as I get 'em.

What lifters & push rods will you go with?  Are staying with stock compression?  Looking forward to seeing your results! :2vrolijk_21:

Kingspoke, thanks for sharing that video.  The dyno chart at the end did it for me--nice shift of the torque curve where I'd like it most.  I hadn't considered push rods and lifters; I see that you bought the S&S.

Mr. D, I planned on having my dealer do the tune.  They've got a reputable guy.  It's not worth it to me to drive across a few states to get the most highly regarded tuner until I upgrade to the 117.

true,I also missed that it was a 110.on ANY 110,stock or not.ide replace the OEM springs with AV&V beehives.WAY more than needed pressure for most cams with the OEM/SE springs
