Well I am now one of the many, major engine work
« on: July 11, 2016, 11:26:02 PM »

My ESP was about to expire and my comp would on occasion make a loud thwack on hot start up.  So I took it to my local dealer for a comp replacement while under ESP. I mentioned to the service writer that I was using a qt every 1000 miles, we all know that some dealers will say that is with in spec.  I had always thought my plugs looked way to dirty to be running correctly, and when their tech pulled the plugs he felt the same. Upon further investigation it appears that I have a bad valve guide and bad rings.  No wonder I was burning oil.  They also found a seal that was starting to leak.  Boy am I glad I got it in under ESP, the bill is over 2k.    So I am now a member of the many who have had major issues with the 110 motor.  The bike has just under 12k on the clock. That is way to soon to have these types of problem.  I have asked them to mic the jugs to make sure it is the rings and not the jugs.  I also am having the lifters replaced  on my dime if they don't show signs of failure, with S&S before they close it up.   Is there anything else I should do while they have it apart?  My ESP wil run out soon and I am inclined to renew it for 2or 3 years.  The last one has paid out way more than it cost.

That sucks.  So sorry to see this for you.  You could pray the cylinders are toast and make the whole sordid affair a good excuse for a cheap 117 upgrade.

Yeah,  I am not looking for big Hp numbers just want reliability and longevity.  I also want to get rid of the heat.  I have mitigated the high temps to the tune of about 30* but it still runs hot on days over 80.  Using Wards fans and a better fan assisted oil cooler.  Sometimes I see the mid 260* on 90+ days.  Are there any advantages to 117 other than more power.  The jug actually look pretty goood but the Pistons and heads have a lot of carbon build up.  I asked the tech if he will measure thr jugs for concentricity in case that might also be a problem here causing the blow by.  Does that sound reasonable.  Now if the jugs are out of round that could be another story.  I really want to keep the ESP intact.

make sure they measure the crank run-out will it is apart.  The harley spec is crazy (believe it is 0.012").  While I'm not engine builder, I would think any more than 0.05" is too much.

If the cylinders need to be honed because they are out of round, maybe consider moving up to 113".  Just a thought.

I would also change out the cam bearing while in there.  Not sure the 2012 was a problem, but doesn't hurt to refresh it while in there.
As for the heads, it's know that the spring are too stiff.  Consider changing them out for AV&V springs and maybe mill the head for a little more compression, but that also brings the cam into question.  If you're still running the stock 255 cam, it's an EPA cam and could be changed out to something that will reduce the heat.  Too many choices to list and depends on riding style, but a nice mild mid range cam is the S&S570 and bump the compression to 10:1.

I concur.  Ya' know, this is the first Harley I've ever owned, that I have modified the Engine before the original Engine had problems.....but I knew problems were forthcoming.  Ain't that a bitch?  With me, this Harley Motor thing is an addiction.  Always has been, and there ain't no cure.  And, obviously.....I ain't the Lone Ranger!  We need to start a meeting!  At least, I get some satisfaction in knowing that some of us here contribute more to the GNP, than some volvo and saab owners, with bicycles strapped to the roofs of 'em!  Jeez...what a sorry site!  :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:  Later--HUBBARD

What oil cooler/fan combo are you using?

Using an ultra cool reefer and the Wards head cooling fans.  Both are good units.  The jag 10 row with fan is also a good unit, I just did not like the look of it because it did not have a cover, it looks kind of raw.

Every set of 110" HD jugs I've had were out of round and/or tapered, so yes, it's a good idea to check them as that will contribute to blowby and power loss.  Also, as stated above: lifters, cam bearings, crank.  Of course, if crank runout is high, you get extra wear on the cam plate side...

I have a 2012 SE Street Glide and had my motor upgraded with a performance package at 12,000 miles and they found a lifter that was ready to give up. I got lucky.

. Very nicely done, you probably have 6 times the cooling capacity of a stock cooler.  What kind of temps do you see on hot days?
