Extended Warranty cover speakers?
« on: July 20, 2016, 09:55:54 PM »

My front right speaker stopped working on my limited. Dealer said probably not covered under extended warranty if it's the speaker. He tried to say that would be like covering brake pads due to normal wear and tear. What? I wouldn't expect a warranty to pay for brake pads, but a faulty sound system should be covered as far as I'm concerned. I got no paperwork for my extended warranty to refer to, so just curious what you all think. Anyone have personal experience with this?

Once again a dealership employee is FOS.  Speakers are not normal maintenance items like brake pads and clutch plates.  Anyone in a dealership who tells you that kind of crap isn't qualified to be the wash boy, much less a service writer/manager/whatever.

Yes, a bad speaker, amp, etc. are covered items under the ESP.

You should have received the full contract for the ESP.  If you didn't, contact the dealer or the ESP company and request a copy.

Jerry

Update:  Turns out I'm the one FOS.  It turns out things have changed and they no longer cover the amp and speakers.

I like what you're saying. I figured the guy was full of crap. I guess I'll take her into the dealer and see what they do. Hope it's an easy fix.

Hey skratch, do you know when they changed that?  I'm sure amps and speakers used to be covered, had a friend get both replaced on his ESP several years ago. :confused5:

Sorry if I misled you.  I swear they used to be covered.  I assume they stopped covering them about the same time Harley started putting lousy amps on their bikes and they had so many failures.

Several people around here have had a speaker quit working on the RushedMore bikes and the problem turned out to be the amp, not the speaker.  If you have to foot the bill yourself I hope it's only a speaker.  If it is the amp, and I was you, I would still contact H-D and ask them to cover it as a goodwill adjustment due to the fact it is and has been a known problem with those bikes.

Once again, sorry for the bad info.

My AMP was covered under the ESP, but the speakers were not.  That is why I ended up with a pair of speaker pulls from fleabay.  Had a speaker DOA when I first got my bike, so I ASS U ME d that was the problem again.  Turned out that the speakers were fine (after testing).  AMP is considered part of the radio so they replaced it under ESP.

Saved some bucks and have two OEM speakers if it turns out you need them.  I paid $100 and will sell for same.

BTW, there are a couple nuts holding on the speaker POD that are an absolute bear to get to.  Definitely need a socket with flex to get them off.

Yes, I found those two screws that were hard to get to. I almost gave up, and wish I had. I finally got them out only to find out you have to pull the whole amp, etc. To get to even more screws to remove the speaker pods. I said F it and put everything back together.

not really sure, this is the first bike that I've had that I figured I oughta get the esp.  but, looking at the back of the 'brochure' that has all the info, it is dated 03/05.

Hmmmm.  I've got to believe that thing has been updated at least one or two times since 2005, since so many things have changed on the bikes themselves over the past eleven years.  Back in 2005 I don't remember Harley even having outboard (separate) amps.  The CVO radio came with an upgraded amp, but it was built into the radio chassis.  Since that time they've gone to remotely located amps under the T-P, remote amps located in saddlebags, and of course the separate amp mounted in the fairing on the latest models.  They are all part of the factory sound system, and without the amp the system is useless.  The factory installed amps really should be covered, but once again it's up to the guys selling the ESP.  Unfortunately the rules that apply to factory warranties do not apply to service contracts (ESP).  I do believe however that I wouldn't just let the dealer blow me off if they say the amp isn't covered, I'd call a manager at the ESP company and discuss it at that level instead.  $450 bucks is worth a phone call or two, at least to me.

ESP covered an iPod cable replacement several months ago.  It never even occurred to me that it wouldn't be covered but now that I read my contract it doesn't mention iPods even though they were on the CVOs starting in 2011 thru 2013 I think.  My RUSE and now my CUSE7 both came with iPods.

As the amp is part of the factory sound system I'd think it would be covered.  I'm not convinced the list of parts covered is all inclusive as things change with model changes.  My position would be if it came on the bike from the factory and it is not a wear item like brake pads and spark plugs for example then it should be covered.

Like Jerry said sure worth a phone call.

Like Jerry said sure worth a phone call.

Even if one calls the ESP provider I'd be a little careful about the questions asked.  I'd prefer to ask them what isn't covered, what their exclusions are, rather than giving them a specific ongoing failure to zero in on.  If you ask them for exclusions and they start listing things that are not specifically in the contract you've got a better counterargument to make.

Gentlemen, with all due respect, you are making a very simple question far too complicated. Unlike a manufacturer's warranty which is controlled by law, an extended warranty or ESP is a contract. The terms of the contract control. There are at least two different contracts out there of which I am aware. I'm also sure they are revised from time to time depending upon the losses incurred by the insurance company. The answer lies in the language of your contract. Someone's prior experience is perhaps relevant but certainly not controlling.

Agreed, and thus my original response about getting his hands on the original contract that he should have received when he bought the ESP.  Because there have obviously been changes over the years, and because some dealerships take care of things under warranty or ESP by filing fraudulent claims and the customer doesn't realize it shouldn't have been covered, individual experiences aren't always a good answer.  Ultimately if there is a disagreement about coverage, I would not just assume the dealership is correct.  There have been many examples where they were not.  A horse has two ends, and it's best to get answers from the correct end.
