Cracked case
« on: October 09, 2004, 01:40:19 PM »

Tell me they all look like this please. Just started washing my bike after 2500 mile ride and I noticed this.

That is the inner primary, not the case.  By the way, that piece looks real sharp when it's switched out to a chrome inner primary.

It's just a casting line and while they vary from one bike to another, we all have it to some degree.  Your bike is fine, but better to be safe than sorry.

A crack will usually be a jagged line and will not be anywhere near that long.  It starts as a very small crack and you usually notice the oil coming through and that's what will draw your attention to it.  The crack in a case (or the inner primary....or any casted part) almost always starts out small and will grow as the bike is ridden.  You can ride a bike for a long time and not even know you have a cracked case if it's in a area that's hard to see.

I hope all of this helps Johnabal.

John, nothing to worry about here.  Just a casting line like JC said.  It is probably where two pieces of the mold came together.  Some will be better and some will be worse depending on how well it was de-finned before being powdercoated.

That what I thought but never remebered the other bike's with this line or this bike the last time I washed it. PARANOIA OR WHAT And yes there was oil in the crack until I washed it. That what got me thinking. THANKS JCZ & Brian

If you had some oil there (and I think I see stains in your photo) then you might have some seepage where your inner primary case joins the engine case, at the base of a cylinder, or somewhere else.  Keep an eye on it, since that's not a place you'd expect to see any oil!

The area that you guys are looking at is a parting line (from the mold) on a cast piece.
The molds, judging by the castings, were different.
