Blown 110B Engine
« on: August 02, 2016, 12:49:03 PM »

Just blown my 2nd 110B engine on my 2011 convertible. First engine, which failed after 24,500 mile, was replaced under warranty. The replacement engine did another 24,500 mile (yes 24,500 mile) and then failed. No one seems to know what caused either failure. This time round if I want a replacement I'll have to pay about £10K for a complete engine or about £5K for a repaired engine (if casings are okay). A lot of money for a bike with 50,000 miles on the clock. Anyone got any thoughts on what to do? I'm going to try to get some compensation from HD as the bike was regularly serviced by a main dealer.

Sorry to hear your going through so much hassle with the motors.  A buddy went through 3 motors on his 07 110, on the third he just traded it in for a new roadking.  His experiences of blown motors was about the same mileage as you have and he is not a heavy handed rider, just a cruiser.   You might look at upgrading the engine with something other than HD parts.   If you going to be out of pocket so be it, but then put S&S inside or go to a low compression 124 with all the right parts inside it and ride on.

S&S replacement crank, Timken bearing, s&s or other pistons, lifters, blue cam plate, pump, tapered pushrods,  use existing heads, but after 50k would send them out to either be worked on or refreshed.

You can use your cases and stay 110 or even go to 124, but you may want to just drop in a motor and be done.   Just remember to upgrade the throttlebody and clutch if you go that route.  :)

Wow, that is disheartening!  It would be good to know what gave way and/or contributed to the failure.  There are the usual HD weak components like lifters, inner cam bearings, etc.  I guess at this juncture, I would lean towards S&S replacement components, or a S&S 124, as Unbalanced suggest.

Sorry for your troubles, and I hope I don't join this ever growing club! :furious:

Not to jinx myself but mine has 22K and I regularly abuse it.  It does get frequent oil changes and I never hammer on it until she's warmed up.  Oh-well, I'm just another tester (consumer) for the Mo-Co. Hope I got a good one.

At today's exchange rate, that's $13,300 for a new engine or $6,650 for repairing the old one.  For that price, I would look into the cost of upgraded components or an upgraded engine.  Can you get S&S engines over there, and can you get them serviced/repaired?

Will the HD dealer take your bike in trade and give you a reasonable amount?

That's hardly a credible statement if it is coming from your dealership. If they took it apart it has to be reasonably simple to diagnose the failure cause...    :nixweiss:

I had more than that on my 2010 but either way I would not be happy with two blown engines at the same basic mileage. As mentioned above the dealer should know what caused the problem. If you are out of warranty you probably won't have much luck on any help. Did the replacement engine have a separate warranty by any chance (24 months) or was it actually just rebuilt?

Sadunbar has it right. Demand to know what caused the failure. And pester the MoCo, you shouldn't have to shell out 6 grand for only 25 thousand miles of service.
