Trouble mounting a tour pack
« on: August 18, 2016, 08:12:57 AM »

I found someone selling a tour pack that matched my specific paint scheme. It was previously on the same bike, a 2013 CVO RK. He sold the bike without the tour pack so luckily I was able to snag it.

When I tried to install it, it would not fit. The mounting hardware was not wide enough. He said he did not install different mounting hardware, he used the stock setup and showed me photos. I mentioned before the sale I was fine buying another docking kit if needed, so he had no reason to lie. My bike was previously owned, however the stock passenger backrest fits on the bike so I assume I also have the stock mounting hardware. I do not have a photo yet attempting to install the tour pack on the bike, but I did upload a photo comparing how much wider my stock passenger backrest mounting hardware is. I just don’t understand why our bikes would be different.

Anyone else install a similar tour pack, how did you go about mounting?
Thanks!

The BSR back rest used different mounts than a tour pak does.

The back rest uses the rear shock upper mounts and they are wider.  As stock, most only came with two point docking points.

The tour pak needs to have an optional four point docking kit.  The front of the tour pack uses the same mount location as the rear of the back rest, but I believe the mount has an inner and outer hub and I don't think they both use the same hub.  So if you only have a two point mount, the tour pak will not fit.

I would find someone local, or even your dealer may have a used bike like yours with the four point docking option that you can trial fit your new tour pak on.

From the pictures, your tour pak looks just like my tour pak mounting bracket.

So probably a new four point docking kit and you're good to go.

Good luck with your new tour pak...

Thank you. I will head to the local dealer and check out that docking kit after work. Even with buying that, the total package was much less expensive than having a custom tour pack made.

I have to agree with Dan's comments in that the proper HD 4 point docking system will fix your issue.

Snagged one yesterday but didn't have any torx wrenches to try it. Got a neighbor lined up to help me tonight. Thanks, fellas!

And remember you might have to add or take a spacer away from the docking points to have it dock properly. It should go on nice and easy, no force involved.

Well I stripped some of the damn teeth on one of the existing bolts to the stock docking hardware. It doesn't sideline me but still frustrating. Not sure how to get that bolt out now. They are on TIGHT!

You may have to drill it out. Good luck.

I'll double check when I'm home. I believe the 25. Don't think the 27 fit.

Something that is very handy to have to remove stripped torx and allen head screws. We ordered several sets of these at work to remove stainless allen bolts that were rounded out and to hard to drill. I was amazed at how well they work.

Thank you! I will check that out now.

I used a 25 torx. Strange because it still felt like it was a little too small, but the 27 was definitely not going to fit. Do they make a 26?

No on the 26.  MoCo goes with lowest bidder = poor quality control.

T27 is the right bit. T25 will strip it, it has too much play in it. I did mine not too long ago and almost made the same mistake.

Weird, the 27 wasn't even close to going in. I will check out a few other bolts as well as the bolts that came with the new docking kit.

Thank you!
