Battery Dead on arrival!
« on: August 23, 2016, 07:35:35 PM »

So my '15 CVO SG arrives tomorrow.  The driver from Haul Bikes said the battery is dead and I might want to bring jumper cables.  While annoyed, I'm thinking, is this realistic after 1 month on a transporter not being started on a year old bike with 400 miles for the battery to be dead.  He assured me a simple jump start and a 50 mile ride back home will have it fully charged.  Is there a risk that any damage has been done to the battery?  Do I buy a new one and which battery and from where?

Not the way I wanted this relationship to begin...   >:(

Sure.  If it's set dead for a year I wouldn't trust it even if it did jump and run.  These bikes are too big, awkward and heavy to push start if you find yourself out somewhere and it won't run.  If it's sat that long just buy a battery and have one less thing to worry about.

No, it was running like a champ 30 days ago.   It only went dead on the trip from Texas to NY in the 30 window.

If I decide to replace the battery, which should I buy and from where??

Best way to find out if the battery is good or not is to have it load tested.

If you are in need of a battery you may want to look at this thread - Deka (Big Crank ETX 30L) vs AGM Duracell Ultra - Longevity/Reliability and search the site for "Deka" for other threads about this battery.

dollar to donuts the reason why your battery is dead is that they didn't put it into transport mode after they loaded it.  so for the last month, your alarm has been going off.  well, maybe not for the entire month, but long enough to kill all power to the battery.  once you completely kill a battery, it never regains full strength, even if you do get it charged.  and using your charging system to try to bring a dead battery back to life is a surefire way to kill your charging system on the bike.  I would just bring a new battery with you, or try to fight with the company to get them to supply a new battery, but either way, i'd have a new battery on hand.

EXACTLY!  We recently had another member go through this when his bike was transported, and the battery was killed by the security system because they didn't put it in transport mode before hauling it all over the place.  And you need to be prepared to have issues with the security system after installing a new battery if in fact it was run completely dead.  That other person did.

Well, I already put in a complaint to the company for reimbursement.  But what kind of issues with the security system could I be looking at?

One of the guys here posted this link for the Deka...  http://www.techbatterysolutions.com/Deka-ETX30L-Battery-p/etx30l.htm
Here is the other link showing BIG CRANK at Battery Mart but doesn't say Deka anywhere.... http://www.batterymart.com/p-Big-Crank-ETX30L-Battery.html
My other question is, is there a difference in batteries from the Deka Big Crank ETX30L and the Deka ETX30L???  The link here shows the battery at $97 but doesn't say BIG CRANK....

Deka is the brand name of the company that makes the battery (East Penn), and they sell them under that name but also sell them under store brand names.  Big Crank is one of those other names, and it is the same battery with a different label on it.

If I plug the attachment with the alligator clips to the battery tender lead coming off the bike, can I use them to jump start the bike rather than taking the seat off and accessing the battery itself?

The fuse will blow if you try to jump start with those leads.

I would pull the battery and charge it and then load test it.

Good Luck

Didn't think about that Richard.  Thanks..
Is it easy to access the battery to jump it.  I'm picking it up today an hour away from home and have to ride it home.

You have to pull the seat, then un-snap the ECM from the top of the battery cover,
now you will have to remove the battery cover to get to the terminals.

Note: the lug bolts use a 10mm wrench.

Will I need anything more than the 10mm wrench to bring?

Bring you complete unabridged curse word dictionary as the battery cover can be a bitch to remove if you've not done it before.  The 'secret' is to push it forward toward the front of the bike and then lift it from the front edge.  There is a metal tab/hook that holds it down and you have to push it forward enough to clear that tab.  Also, I would bring some zip ties to use to hold the ECM out of the way once you unsnap it from the battery cover.  Very tight quarters - not much room to navigate.
