Another one bites the dust - it sure appears.
« on: September 02, 2016, 07:34:57 PM »

Beautiful sunny day, temps moderating, perfect for a 300+ mile ride through the countryside with a couple of my buds and our wives.  Just about 100 miles from home coming in to a small town I was in 4th gear doing the limit of 45mph with cruise on when bike slowed.  I looked down and noticed that my cruise had dropped out.  Strange?  So I downshifted and accelerated shifting back up to 4th.  Everything seemed OK but not quite right if you know what I mean.  Two lane road with no shoulder so couldn't stop for about a half mile in town at stop sign.  Motor idled erratically then died.  Shell station right there on the corner so I fired it up and pulled in.  Hadn't heard any noises but I had ear plugs in and the radio on.  So took off my helmet and removed ear plugs as did my friends and we fired it up.  Sounded like a nest of baby robins when mama comes home with a big fat juicy worm.  Uh oh, that sure sounds like lifter problem so I shut it right down.  Four and a half hours later my friend has gone back home gotten his trailer and come back for me.  Made it to the dealer an hour before closing and wrote it all up.  But they are slammed in service - probably about two weeks to get it on a lift table but they will see what they can do.  I said probably not more than a couple hours at most to check out cam chest area and see if my suspicions are correct so see if you can't work it in.

This does not sound good.  Think I'll change my screen name to Quattro Destroyer as this is the fourth 110 motor I've blown up, lol. Thank goodness I do have ESP.  Hope it will all work out to my satisfaction.

Bike has 63,500 but motor was replaced previously at 22k. So this motor had about 41k. Lifters never changed.

That's a drag, to say the least, Jerry.   >:(   Good luck with the repairs.

...and you thought you didn't need an emergency backup bike.

Ok, no teasing.  Sorry another lunched underneath you.  You're certainly not a poster child for engine abuse so it ain't the rider.  Damn shame.

I indirectly know a guy over in the bootheel who had his third crap out underneath him on a 2012 that had 80k on it at the time.  About 50k then 30k were the failures as I got the details.  Not sure what term ESP original or renewals he had purchased but about a month after the last failure he tried to renew again.  Assumed it would be an automatic thing.  Apparently not.  He was told that, so far as ESP was concerned, the contractor no longer wanted his business.  Hadn't thought about until then but it seems they might choose to weed out their bad risks.

That is true.  I ride them but I don't ride them hard - just quite a bit.  Don't know anything I could have done or shouldn't have done just poor design / poor quality parts imo.  I'm getting a bit tired of this!

Sorry to hear this Jerry.  I'm becoming a believer in some bikes are snake bit.  ( Hello Lexi )  Good luck, hope this works out in your favor.  I'D think about a deal on a new 16 vs beta testing a 17.  Lot of changes with very little real world experience.  FWIW.

Dang Jerry, you flogging them things?

S&S recommends changing out lifters every 20k miles, or so I have been told by a top tier S&S dealer.

Good Luck

Sorry to hear this Jerry.  Agree with Philip on the lifter change out.  Seems you got much better than expected performance from those lifters before they chit the bed.

Well yeah, I hear you and i thought about changing them - then I thought again.  Here's what I mean:  To keep my ESP I'd need to stay stock.  Of course I could change to the H-D SE lifters but I hoped that is what this motor already had since it was a replacement itself and just after the time they had a running change in production from the C lifters to the SE.  Once they tear it down we'll see I guess.

And what about pushrods?  If I went with adjustables (even H-Ds) could ESP point that that as a cause of future failure.  So to be safe probably need to stick with stock one piece prushrods and the extra labor that enatils.  So to change out lifters, probably inner cam bearings with labor would be pushing $1k.  Now I paid good money (and quite a bit of it) for the ESP so why should I spend my money doing their work?  That at least was my cheap azz thinking.  Chit if it fails let them pay to fix it.  I mean that's why I bought the ESP, right!

Jerry, I understand the situation and the route you chose. My 110" is bone stock except for the S&S lifters and inner cam bearings I installed at 36k, I was under esp at that time but decided to be proactive, still no guarantee. I recouped some of my monies back from esp purchase. I'm self insured on my bike now.

I'm glad you have a dealer that works with you and wish you luck in the future endeavors with HD products.  :2vrolijk_21:

Sincerely
