Lifter Trouble
« on: September 03, 2016, 03:27:48 PM »

Any ideas what caused this. Rest of cams and lifters in as new condition. This cam slightly scuffed but no where near as bad as the lifter. Gaterman with about 10k miles. Bike has 30k on it. Gaterman's put in as preventative maintenance (sic).

Heard intermittent chirping and stopped pretty much straight away. On another photo there is one small faint flat showing.

No debri knocking about in the cam chest.

Obviously replacing both cams and all lifters. Replacing bearings and tension shoes while I am in there.

Found the same problem in my 09 today, only one bad roller! !!! Replaced compensator with new style, then moved over to this side of engine,  now replacing lifters, cams, and push rods. Had the same chirping,  intermittent noise,  25k. It appears the needle bearings inside roller went bad first.

almost makes me wonder if the lobe on the cam was the culprit to begin with. Maybe a bad finish on the lobe to its toll over time? Just spit ballin though..

It would be good to know if it is the same loab and lifter that fails the most. Maybe there is a pattern like poor finish on the loabs.

Don't think the lobe was the trouble, as stated, removed OE lifters at 18k as preventative measure following reports on their failure rate and impending doom. In reality the lifters removed where still good to go.

This was front cylinder inlet. See previous reply re; lobe surface finish.

Mine turned out to be front intake also. 255's cams with original lifters 25k miles. Replaced with 255 's and updated se lifters. Since we updated compensator as well, hopefully good for another 25 k.

Thanks Kirby,  if these fail again I'll check out the s&s lifters. Any cam preferences?  Turned down the Woods at the dealer,  didn't have enough input or info.

we use a lot of S&S or T-man cams, give a bit of a idea of what your looking for (what power at what RPM range, compression, ect) and I can suggest cams

Gaterman lifters are a good design, but materials are crap. like Jims of years ago, Gatermans have too many documented failures.
I would flush the motor and oil pan.

Good advice there.
Don't forget the cooler, I know of no good way to flush that.
There are some good Delphi based and Johnson lifters available but on a CVO I would consider any of them a maintenance item at 20k.
