Dash cams (bike)
« on: September 04, 2016, 02:37:01 PM »

Thinking of putting a dash cam system on the bike. Found a decent two channel system that might work if I can find room. Wondering what folks here have done in regards to cameras on bikes.

https://canadadashcam.com/catalogs/types-of-dashcam/motorcycle-dashcams here is the two channel system

Excellent idea, allot cleaner with just one screen involved. Video inputs from ironcross should be doable, matter of fact they need to have a kit.  :nixweiss:  guess that's limited to the new infotainment system. Breakouts ain't got one.

Endless possibilities there, enough cash will solve anything in this dept.

Good luck keep us apprised

I guess it could be a nice idea for those who want to film a ride and would otherwise have to strap on cameras to get the shots?
The old geezer in me that didn't grow up in the selfie era doesn't feel the need to document my every movement.
It may be nice for the rare time someone runs into you or attempts to tamper/steal your bike but it could also be used as evidence against you in the event you cause a wreck or violate traffic laws.  Some riders could have problems if their spouse reviews the tape of the ride and see that you weren't where you said you were going too...... :huepfenlol2:

Now that I've reached the ripe old age of 39 (sarcasm) I gave up riding it like I stole it and general Jackassery in town long ago.

Mainly living in Southern California I figure it would be a good idea for when people try to hit me. Yes I did say try lol. It really is pretty bad out here these days.  I suppose it's dependent on the particular area where they live and ride. Some worse than others but all pretty bad.

Much like you guys I could give a rat's ass about the narcissistic selfie aspect of it, mainly figure it'd be a good idea for that c.y.a. aspect

I have to do a little digging around under the seat and see if I will have any room for that little display / DVR box. Doesn't look that thick, might be able to wedge it in between the battery and the seat somewhere. I will see if I can dig up some measurements on it.

Will not work on the bike due to not waterproof, but if anyone wants one for the car or truck, I have a Black Box brand in ours. It is 1080P, 130Degree wide angle and holds a 32G mini-sd. The quality is amazing and even at night license plates and surroundings are to clear. Cost $49.95 on ebay and inc everything you need except the SD card which is about $8.00.
Everyone who has seen the replay of the video on the computer can not believe it, also works good for camera/mic in computer if you need one. I have it set to record 2minutes then start again. Not sure how many hours before it actually starts over but it is a long time when you only drive 5 miles to work like my wife. Be good if accident etc. Had it since christmas, only real use so far was lady hit fender with her door and dented it while I was sitting in the car, she denied it and started to walk off when I told her I had video, she agreed to call her insurance from the scene. Had dent repaired with PDR, still saved me $65

Not about selfies but I see where it could be a benefit if you live in high traffic areas.  It's not uncommon here in So Cal with the crowded freeways for somebody to come from another lane, into your lane in front of you at half your speed and only two car lengths in front of you.  This happened to me years ago, on I-80 headed home from the bay area back to Sacramento on a Friday commute time.  I skidded right in to her back end.  You know it turns in to the "I'm sorry, I didn't see you".  She acknowledged that on the scene but her insurance company denied claim for my injuries because I ran in to her.  It was years ago but I remember thinking "if I had a camera mounted on my windshield".

Fast forward to current time......now I do have a camera mounted to my windshield and it is water proof and it's called a Go Pro.

RV owners have them for the same reason.....to often somebody will pull right in front of a truck and 5th wheel trailer or a motorhome and then slam on their brakes because traffic stopped all of a sudden.  The car stops and the motorhome stops a foot inside their bumper.  :nixweiss:

GoPro's are great, resist vibration, excellent recording etc. But unless you buy the special back you have to view the video on your phone or when you get home, where-as on a cheapo dash cam they have a screen built in, AND they also are not waterproof unless you put them in the protective case.
But biggest difference for me was the $350.00 price difference ($50.00 vs $400.00). Hopefully some one will come out with a cheaper alternative soon that is waterproof.

$199 is pretty affordable.....   http://www.bestbuy.com/site/gopro-hero-lcd-hd-waterproof-action-camera/6954009.p?id=1219667156948&skuId=6954009

I have the Hero 4 Sessions which is the smallest GoPro yet...just a bit larger than a postage stamp and a perfect square cube.  This thing will fit in the front pocket of my levis and not even be an issue.  It's so small, I'm afraid I'm not going to loose/leave it some place.   Takes incredable pictures....even in the rain but you can't play it back immediatly.  Can't imagine why I'd need to, when riding but there may be a need/time.   :nixweiss:       Wow, just did a search.....it was bought for me as a gift the first week it came out but I just did a search and it's already down to $199.....   https://www.amazon.com/GoPro-CHDHS-102-HERO-Session/dp/B01C80O0ZU/ref=sr_1_2/162-4484604-5057313?ie=UTF8&qid=1473115734&sr=8-2&keywords=go+pro+session+4

I thought it was great for motorcycling simply because the windshield mount is so small and the camera with all the extras and the case for all the assessories is so small it doesn't take up much room at all.

Much, much smaller than the dash cam that I have in my truck.

I know about the GoPro Hero Sessions and it is only $199.00 but even GoPro calls it a starter camera. But still $199.00 and EVERYTHING is extra. No car charger, no auto on/off etc. I have read all the reviews because I am thinking about replacing our older big GoPro but other than being waterproof I just see nothing good about this unit. IMHO cheap is decieving and just not true in this situation. A cord/controller/suction or some kind of mount is going to make this thing over $300.00. Maybe you are using it without accessories but most folks won't do this.
Has anyone tried the new Garmin Unit?
