Texas high for bike insurance?
« on: September 07, 2016, 03:17:33 PM »

Hello all,

Moved from Maryland to Texas last summer and my insurance (HD Dairyland) a little more that tripled in cost.

Is this expected or should I shop around?

Been a Dairyland subscriber for 15 + years.

Cheers!

You should shop around, but the same thing happened to me when I moved from Minnesota. Being able to ride year round drives the cost up I guess. I'm with Progressive and it went from $365 to $940 per year.....

Yes insurance companies base rates on many things such as how many months a year is the state's riding season, how heavy is the traffic/accident stats, and of course the crime stats for stolen bikes. That could also cover things like recovery rates for stolen vehicles. I can only imagine the recovery rate on a border state could be less due to international theft rings operating.

One way I've found to somewhat beat the system is to insure a second or even a third bike. By adding a second bike my total insurance bill went down. Since you can only ride one bike at a time if the value of the second bike is far less than your CVO they must figure it cuts down on the amount of time you are able to ride the more expensive bike thus decreasing the insurance companies exposure. In Texas the second bike does not have to be running or licensed or "theoretically" even exist anymore as long as you have a vin number. I found this out by canceling insurance on a second bike and my insurance went up $220. My dad insures 3 bikes, two of which haven't run the in years. I insure two.
