GPS...nah, its infotainment ;)
« on: September 09, 2016, 06:27:43 PM »

I finally had enough with my factory NAV on my 09 Ultra CVO.  Can't get any map updates and they are way too out of date...SO:

I bought the chrome handlebar mount from the MC and a new Garmin 665LM and set out to install.
In the end, I moved the factory XM antenna to a new location and installed the bigger "puck" GXM40 antenna that came with it.  I also connected the audio-out on the harness to a 3.5 extender and ran it up neatly and connected it my factory aux on the face.
I put a 16GB MicroSD Class 10 card into my computer and copied over 700 MP3's to it.

I now have XM Sat, MP3 and talk-over voice directions coming out of my factory deck from the 665...very sweet!! I can adjust the volume feed to the line out (never 100, too much distortion) and control the audio from my handlebar audio switch, while seeing and selecting my music on the clutch-side GPS mounted on the bar.

No more "spotty" XM reception either, so a win/win all around.

Next up...gotta get those factory speakers swapped out...my hogtunes tweeter bar has been saving me, but my patience is gone with the factory GPS ;)

Unlimited data on my plan so happy as I can be. Had the Radio modded with blue tooth too simple now  :D

On the Rushmore bikes is there a way to make the 660 talk to the radio and have the music and directions playing through the bike speakers and not use the infotainment gps at all?

The old bikes had an aux input that worked great for this but the new bikes do not. Not sure if somehow you could use the USB cable in the dash for this or not?

Yes.

There is a HD P&A adapter available that facilitates the 3.5mm rear aux jack.  You must also take the bike to the dealer so they can use the DTT to add the rear aux input.  If you have a Road Tech version of the 660/665/590, you can also have them select "Tone Interrupt" so that it will work like the old Navigation Interface Module to interrupt the other sources allowing navigation commands.

I have my 2015 FLHTK set up this way and used my RT z660 and new RT z590 with it, with great results.

A word of caution:  Be careful to do the research so that you can advise the dealer on what settings to change with the DTT.  I've had 2 dealers not have a clue and ended up without CB until I found the information myself and took it to them so they could correct it.  I now have a screenshot printed and keep it in my owners manual, just in case.

I also use a 665 on my 15 CVO RGU.  I use the bikes GPS as a primary unit but if I'm questioning something, I have the Garmin as a backup.  I also find I like using the garmin to find gas, food, and hotel stops.  I may be using it because I'm more use to it, but oh well, I like it.

Just replaced the front fairing speakers with hogtunes 352F-AA Gen III's and the difference is substantially noticeable.  The only downside is it seems like my hogtunes tweeter bar is less effective, because its less pronounced with the new fairing speakers putting out so much more, but the blend is awesome!!

Next consideration will be the lowers woofer kit...but I'll likely be content for now with the new setup.

BTW; MAJOR difference if you grab a monster cable to put from the Garmin to the Aux, as apposed to the one that comes with garmin...crappy quality, too long with coil, and obviously only intended for the headset, even though it says for Audio Out.  For the $15-20, worth every penny on the quality of the music coming through the factory deck off MP3 & SiriusXM & directions off the Garmin ;)

I was asked via PM to give a few more details, and I wanted to add them to the thread too.

Here is the part you will need.

http://www.harley-davidson.com/store/35mm-auxiliary-input-kit

In the instructions (they are under the "More Info" tab), please note step 6.  The dealer will need to set this up for you.  The setting mentioned is the only one they need to touch.

Personally, I used
  • 6.Have a Harley-Davidson dealer use the Digital Technician II service tool to update the "Audio Inputs" to the desired setting. "Audio Only" "Tone Detection Only" "Both Audio AND Tone Detection" This update is available without charge from any dealer. Dealer labor rates could apply for the update procedure.
This allows me to use my Garmin as a media source.
The tone detection is what allows the Boom! head unit stop playing media, and play navigation instructions.  The Road Tech zumo660/665/590 are the only units that transmit this tone to be recognized by the head unit.  IF you don't have one of these units, the tone interrupt will not function properly.

I hope this helps.

Does anyone know if the procedure above to add Garmin Zumo 660LM GPS audio to the Boom Radio works for a 2107 Limited CVO?

The reason I ask is two fold, this is my first Limited CVO, previously had Road Kings, so not familiar with the Audio system, secondly in the attached picture there is a second (Grey) twelve-way Molex, could this be used with the Kit 3.5mm Auxiliary Input Kit part # 69200907?

According to the fitment information for the kit, yes it will work on a 2017 CVO Limited.  Take a look at the instructions for the kit, and note that while they say to connect to the black 12 pin Molex connector (P&A Audio) they also say the color of that connector may vary.  Older models seem to have black, the 2017 has grey.  Don't forget to make the mod listed for bikes that have CB.
