low torque right off the line?
« on: September 18, 2016, 07:55:52 PM »

I recently purchased a 2016 CVO RG, traded my 103 Limited. I feel the CVO has a bit of a dead spot right off the line compared to my 103, once she gets rolling it's all good. I didn't think too much of it until I was talking to a friend with the exact same bike that traded in a 2013 CVO and he says his 13 was a lot better right off the line than this bike is. I am told the CVO's have the famous SE255 cams so I guess I'm curious more than anything...anybody else feeling the same thing with their 2016?  It has the stock AC, V&H Power Duals, Power Vision, canned map.

Just my $. 02:  The 255 cam is a low-end, grunt cam.  So, what you may be noticing is poor throttle response which is usually the result of a poor tune.  Also, if your "Power Duals" are true duals, that is probably costing you low end power, too.

I believe the Power Duals are an x-pipe or thereabouts.  I think the key to this puzzle is the "canned map".

Lol, the 124 ain't happening! The power duals is an "X" pipe and a pretty good performer. The canned map could be the issue, my friend that agrees with my assessment has had his bike tuned by Fuel Moto so not sure what that means...
I may do some engine work over the winter and get a tune.
I was more curious  than anything, I thought the CVO would perform better, especially since it supposedly has these "grunt" cams. My 2010 96" With Woods 6-6 cams would pull away from this bike

So what mufflers are you running?
The tune and whole exhaust system will strongly influence the bikes street manors.
Throttle progressiveness, timing, and AFRs corrected will yield a much smoother cooler running motor.

Harley introduced a "torque management" system several years back, about 2008/2009 if I remember correctly, that alters the rate the actual throttle blade opens compared to the twist grip rotation.  They were able to do this once they incorporated electronic throttle control.  If the system used for your canned tune offers the ability to adjust throttle progressivity, take a look at the current settings.  Then change them so you get a straight one to one curve; ie. throttle blade opening percentage matches grip rotation percentage at all rpms.  See if that doesn't improve your throttle response when leaving a stop.

Running V&H Monster Rounds at the moment. I will have a look at the "torque Management" settings. I believe this to be more of a charecteristic than a symptom of something...I think it acted this way when stock as well. Maybe the torque management is the culprit? I am really not impressed with these SE255 "grunt" cams at all.

Canned map is the culprit.
Besides throttle progressive adjustment there is acceleration enrichment too. Most of the time this setting can be trimmed back. But before the nuances are fixed getting the VEs corrected is most important then proper afr targets

The ignition timing is also a huge factor in the response, or lack of.

Comparing the stock HD 110 map with a TTS stage 1 map, there is a difference of 7-10 degrees idle to 1500 and 20-50 kpa MAP.
(this difference is still there att 100 kpa)

I dont know what the canned map you are running is set at, but the difference compared to the stock map is dramatic.
So was the difference in my engine after tuning.

Very good advice there.
20ish degrees at idle to begin with.

I think it's the clutch. Until my clutch broke in and I got some miles on my bike it would grab so fast that it would bogg down the bike from a stop and almost stall it. After about 3000 miles it loosened up and I have a useable friction zone.

I bought a brand new 2016 cvo streetglide and felt the bike chugged a lot from take off. my 2010 cvo did not do this. I had a front pipe and slip ons installed along with woods tw222 cams and the chugging is gone. my dyno numbers are 102hp and 122tq
