Help to install heated grips
« on: September 30, 2016, 03:17:23 PM »

I know I've seen the thread in here somewhere but for the life of me I cannot find the right search terms.  Long and short, I have a 2015 CVO Street Glide.  I just bought a set of take off heated grips from a 2016 CVO Road Glide for really short money.  From what I have read, this is pretty much plug and play, but does anyone have a "how to" for the installation?  I'm sure I've seen someone post this, even with pictures of the harness you have to plug into in the fairing.

Thanks in advance!

It's a pain in the ass!! I removed mine cause I didn't like the look, ran heat demons instead and they work much better

I would download the instructions from HD web site.  Doesn't need to be the same grip...just one that is for your year/model and internal wiring

The throttle side is super easy...it's the left side that you need to work the wires through.

I do not believe there is a accessory grip that has a fitment for our bikes (unless there is something new).  There are other threads discussing how the stock heated grips from the CVO Limited will work, I'm hoping to hear from someone who's done that install.

Thanks,

There is no accessory heated grip for the CVO street glide.  On my 13 CVO King, I used the factory headed grips from the CVO Ultra.

I have heated grips on order from a 17 CVO Limited to install on my 17 CVO Street Glide.  Service manager tells me its no issue.  Wires should already be in bars due to these bikes are can-bus.

Bit of a price difference too compared to a P&A grip, right ?

Heated grips from a 14 or 15 Ultra will work. you will need the correct connector and pins and the bike side connector is already there. If you go with an earlier year, which is what I did, there is one extra wire that has no place to go on a later bike. The earlier grips have 2 power wires, the new ones have only one. Just wire the 2 power wires coming off of the grip together into the one bike side wire and everything will work. Check wiring diagrams from the 15 and the earlier model and it will make sense.

This link is to the instruction manual to install heated grips with internal wiring. They are the grips that I believe come in the limited.

For some reason HD doesn't recommend the internal wiring on the CVO SG.....but many have done it.

Check out the instructions and If you wish PM me and we can arrange a time to discuss the install.  I done this 6 times between mine and friends bikes.

I just installed new handle bars on mine last week. The right side looks to be just plug and play, still have to plug in the connector inside the fairing, but the left side needs wires ran thru the bars. Odd why the left side isn't prewired like the right side, doesn't make sense

The left side has the controller and it is what controls the right side.

I've put these in before and if they would prewire the bikes on both sides I bet they would sell a bunch more of them.   Its the installation that makes you hate them.   Worth it, but that left side requires at least three beers.

My '15 CVO Street Glide was pre-wired on the bike side.

I did the install while doing a bar swap and I used earlier grips. You will need to buy the connectors and pins for the new grips if you don't have them. I used light rope and a weight to run through the bars to pull the wire back, but since you have wires currently in the bars that would be tough. You may try weed wacker line which is stiff enough that you may be able to run it through the bars to the other end to use as a pull line. If you want to PM me your number I can walk you through the process.

So just to follow up my own post, the take off grips I got from eBay were perfect, and a buddy of mine (who's an ex-HD mechanic) installed them in a couple hours.  He thought it was nice I asked for help but already sorta knew what to do, found both connectors right away, ran the wires through the bars.  $125 for the grips and $100 for the install, figure I'm way ahead of the game, and I forgot how warm those grips really get.  Thanks for all the feedback.
