Sturgis Attendance
« on: October 02, 2016, 01:30:28 PM »

October issue of Thunder Press has a somewhat interesting article regarding attendance, surrounding area and future of Sturgis Rallye. I was not aware attendance had fallen so far this year (329,000 +). Also found it interesting that some residents are tired of us, not suprising but I really thought they needed us more than most places due to income, but I guess not.

The rally was great this year, probably in large part to the smaller turnout. The year after an anniversary year has always been far below. The one's saying they are tired of it are probably on the outside looking in, ie not making money. Just let someone in the know show me they don't want my money and I will oblige. Myrtle Beach did it in 2008 when I missed my first rally in 15 years and have never been back. Many of my friends, weenie riders as I now call them started taking their hard earned cash back to where they weren't wanted............................NOT ME

...but I really thought they needed us more than most places due to income, but I guess not.

While on a trip I happened to get into a conversation in a diner with a couple who live in Sturgis, SD full time….except during the Rally.  They were very respectful of my mode of transportation and inquired if I had ever been in Sturgis.  I told them I had been to the rally more than 15 times (really…I lose track for a number of reasons but it happens if you live long enough).  I asked them what they thought of “us”.
Wow!  They have lost their grocery stores, family-owned year around downtown businesses, and a lot of non-motorcycle oriented services.  Oh yeah, there are a few businesses (mostly owned by out of towners) that have struck it rich with the biker crowd even though they are only open 3 weeks a year, not unlike the gold rush days, I suppose.   If you listen to the published releases, vendors pay for all of the increased cost of law enforcement, etc.  My new acquaintances had a different perspective.  Not only do local’s taxes increase, but It’s sad to look at the businesses along main street and Lazelle St. during non-rally months.  I know there is increased revenue to the city and county due to the rally but the quality of life is vastly different for those who call Sturgis home.  Guess there’s no free lunch for anyone.

Fewer people in an attendance is a plus, as far as I’m concerned.  I started going to the Black Hills during the week prior to rally week and really enjoyed freedom of traveling and gas stops and motel rates and…everything.
Just getting old, I guess.

Ummm , they aren't tired of our money, trust me. Sturgis goes on. Last year I was there at the 75th. No surprise it was down this year and no biggie.

Have not read article but I also enjoy the year after an anniversary. It was dead this year compared to anytime I have been there in last 15 years. Sixth time, so not a crowd expert but less was definitely better.

The 75th Anniversary set record attendance.  No surprise it is way down the year after.  I was out there for the 74th and 75th.  The 74th was down also.  I have rode out for the rally 6 time.  This year we rode out the first week of June, it was great to be able to ride all the great roads with out all the people.

Hey Don, looking online on the Thunder Press website, to which article are you speaking?  Doing a search using "Sturgis" as the header doesn't get me anything that looks similar to your reference article.  I don't get Thunder Press in hard copy so online would be the only way for me to read.  If you have a link, that would be helpful.  If it's hard copy only, I'll have to go on what you have posted.... :)

Why not provide a link to it, or scan it, and post it. :nixweiss: Without that it's just another (other) motorcycle related discussion.
