180/55-18B tires
« on: October 09, 2016, 08:26:16 PM »

The cost of tires for CVO's is crazy.  I picked up a 16 inch wheel off a comparable year and replaced the chrome Agitator wheel with a stock FL wheel.  Lost the chrome but it's behind the bags, so who cares.  180/65-16B from mail order was $162.99, I replace the tires myself with homemade equipment and use air soft bb's for bead balancing.  When the cost of proper stock size tires comes down I will put the chrome 18 inch back on.  The OD on these tires is too close to call. One way to beat the game!

Jake a Wilson has a 180/55/18 American Elite for $211. Great tire and you can keep your CVO wheel

the american elite tires are nice tires and are much cheaper than the stock dunlops and come in the proper 18'' rear, 19'' front sizes.  and seriously, you may not think you see much of the rear tire, but really, you do.

I wonder about people that can't do things for themselves or pay $40,000 for a motorcycle.  To each their own.  I fix my own bike and payed less than half the 40Gs for my 2011 CVO.  Some take pride in being self sufficient, others in the limit on their credit card. Sorry to try to educate you.  Ride safe and enjoy the hotel room.

Not sure its pride in the limit of the credit card as much as pride in owning a beautiful CVO bike (whatever you paid for it) and confused when someone "downgrades" the rear wheel to save less than a hundred bucks on a tire.
Not sure about others here but personally just don't feel "educated" by you on that move but to each their own..

I do all my own maintenance but that has nothing to do with putting a ghetto looking 16" mismatched wheel on cause I am too cheap to pay for a tire every 20k. What you are suggesting makes zero sense.  :nixweiss:

Also, my bike is paid for so don't worry about how much it was. You're on the CVO forum not the 1979 Honda 750 forum.

When we upgraded my wife's 15 Road glide special with custom paint, chrome front end, and Chrome wheels, I sure did the rear as I wanted it to look 100%.  I'll suffer the extra money for the rear tire every 15,000 miles which is rather frequent seeing it has 46,000 miles on it.  So figure thats two rear tires as my bike had 43K on it when the engine failed at 2 years and 12 days old.

I'm amazed none of you guys have commented yet on the Air Soft plastic BB's being used for balancing.  Maybe I'm the only one who picked that up from the OP?

It's a cheap DIY instead of using Dyna Beads.

For the record.  There is nothing special or magical about the 18 in tires on CVO's.  Harley used them because for many years they alone controlled the production and sale of this size with the weight rating for the heavier bikes.  That's why they were able to charge the price they did and why most people complained about wasting an extra $150 on them.  The 18 inch tire is or has not been readily available around the country. I have been in shops from Florida to Idaho, up and down this country and 16 inch tires are available everywhere.  If you travel more than a county and a half from home and need a tire maybe 1700 miles away the 16 inch is more available and buying one will not ruin your vacation by waiting for one to be delivered.  Harley Davidson is a T-Shirt company that sells a few bikes.  They are an impressive marketing company and are successful beyond belief.  As I said before, spend your money as you want, I have been riding and racing bikes and cars since 1973, I will keep my experience's to myself.  There's more to being a biker than paying someone to work on it for you or buying the things you could do for yourself.  Chrome don't get you home!

HAHAHAHA .........Loving the thought TN :2vrolijk_21:
.........Harley Davidson is a T-Shirt company that sells a few bikes! ......
....with such a contemptuous statement RG ...........I'm wondering why you would seek out a "chrome laden" Harley-Davidson CVO to spend your hard earned money on?!?!? Considering that many of us here can afford a new CVO every few years and you appear to be more "thrift oriented" ......your comments are none-the-less welcome .......but no need to come across as "holier than thou".

FWIW ......as I've never gotten more than 15k on a set of HD Dunlops and have always had annoying cupping to deal with on the rears, I'm now into 2700 miles on a set of American Elite's and very pleased thus far. Of course while new tires always feel wonderful and it's way too early for a realistic wear/cupping evaluation, I'm both pleased and optimistic the AE's will be my answer ;D!
