hi speed wobble
« on: February 14, 2007, 07:15:13 PM »

has anybody else experienced a high speed wobble in the middle of a interstate corner?  I mean between 80 and 100 on a sweeping bend the steering seems to wobble back and forth...it is kind of bothersome.  I have had the dealer check the neck bearings and alignment and they say everything is fine.  I was wondering if it could be the weight of the leather tour pak and the fact that it is behind the rear axle?  any thoughts?????

Welcome to the site hdctss.  Do a search on high speed wobble and you will probably find a lot of info (on different years/models)..  I don't recall very many/if any members with an 06/07 SEUC with a wobble problem.  I'm sure others will chime in with any input.  A member had a wobble problem with his 04/05 SEEG and after everything was replaced and checked twice, the problem was the cables binding where they came down thru the fairing at the neck.

Welcome hdctss

 :welcome_005:

first off, is this your first "bat-winged" fairing bike?  In other words...where the fairing is mounted to the front forks.

Ever try and hold an umbrella in an 80 mile an hour wind?
You've got a huge parachute on the front end.  Every little wind cuttent is going to ripple over the front fairing and all you have to control it is a tire patch the size of a deck of cards and a handlebar.  It's a characteristic of the fork mounted fairing bikes and SO many variables.

1.  tire inflation
2.  bike loaded down?
3.  road grooves
4.  windy
5.  other vehicles wind turbulance?
6.  distribution of the load
7.  passenger
8.  modifications done to suspension

Biggest thing is to relax and try not to fight it.  The wheel is going to act like a huge gyroscope and is going to want to stay upright.  If it's a tank to tank slap...then I'd be concerned.

Enjoy the ride.   :beerchug:

At 100 mph even on a straight road you're going to get some instability (wobble) because of the vortex that is created behind the fairing.  The fact that the fairing is mounted to your forks instead of the frame, that votex is going to cause some minor wobbling or "jitters" in the the handlebars.  But like sooiee stated, there are many other factors that contribute to handling performance, and not all of them are bike related.  Cross/head/tail winds are a factor also.  The bike will get you through it, just don't try to over-compensate for the effect, that will actually cause you more problems then you want to have.  The leather tour pak actually has nothing to do with that.  Where the tour pak comes in to play, especially if you have it loaded, is during low speed maneuvering, as your center of gravity, is moved slightly higher.  Like it was stated, relax and ride it out...

Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,

As others have said there are many factors that cause the instability. The key is to be aware of the conditions that lead to the issue and try to avoid them. Road grooves for one is always something to be aware of. Proper air pressure in the tires is also VERY important.

The "wallow" you feel in the rear end of the bike for me was almost completely eliminated when I replaced the rear shocks with the Progessive 440's. I also have the Ride STR8 and it helped as well.

Welcome. HDCTSS!

Anybody else?  Oh, all of us, I think!!  ;) It's a well known feature on Glides since Willie G was a boy.  Always between  80-90, long sweeping bends, and a kind of wallowing wobble that feels like the frame is rubber, with the front not connected to the back. That the one?

There has been lots of discussion here and elsewhere over the years, and many supposed causes and potential remedies. Search on here for True Track and you'll see. That's just one of the remedies - there's another similar one, but my old brain can't remember the name.  ;D

It's quite alarming, but once you are used to it, you know what it is.

Me, I just live with it. focuses my attention and makes sure that my sphincter is leak proof!  :orange:

Jim,
It's been awhile since I rode the old "SphincterGlide". :D  Pucker factor of 11 on a scale of 1-to-10 in a 90 degree turn.

Yesterday things were looking up!  It hit 10 degrees C in the daytime, nice and bright too.  Snow is pretty well gone from the top of the hills, and today we've got A LOT of heavy rain - that's good, washes away the salt.

My bike gets registered today, valid from 1st March, so 13 days until I CAN legally get on the road, so let's all pray for rain all the time till 28th Feb, then sun every day in March!  :huepfenjump3:

Ok first of all I have been riding for right at 40 years this year.  Started out on a Briggs and Stratton mini bike when I was 10 and been hooked on two wheels ever since.  This is my third Ultra, been riding them since 98.  My last one, an '01, was very well built, with a highly modified 95 inch motor and Baker DD6.  I am reasonably familiar with high speed (80 to 100 for 1 to 1-1/2 hours straight) riding.  I ride two up from Connecticut to Georgia about 950 miles and normally do it in one day.  The truth of the matter is my '01 was both quicker and faster than my '07 SEUC.  I have experienced the airflow wobble and this is not it.  It seems to mostly do it in corners, leaned over and at higher than legal speeds unless I am down south or out west.  I was just hoping that somebody here had experienced it and cured it so I could point either myself or my dealer in the correct direction.  I am now considering adding the additional aftermarket  true track engine/transmission mount in the hopes of curing it.  I would like to thank everybody for their advice, and for the welcome to the site.

Hi again hdctss.

40 years on 2 wheels for me this year too, come November!  :orange:

I'm on my 4th Glide (though I've yet to ride my new one!) and have done a lot of miles on rentals/other peoples.  The wobble factor seems to vary bike to bike. The worst I've had was my 96 Evo, the worst I've ridden was a a friend's 05 FLHTCSE - but they've all done it to a greater or lesser extent.  I don't put it down to airflow though.

If you try the TrueTrack or RideStr8, I'd love to hear if it cures the wobble I'm talking about!
