114 Heavy Breather add on.
« on: November 12, 2016, 06:41:31 AM »

On the 114 has Anyone added a Heavy Breather to their bike yet. Do you have to have a tuner or can you just bolt it on with the stock tune?

Have you already or intend to in the future replace the mufflers? Or just going to buy the Heavy Breather?

I would think that if you are only changing the ventilator style ac out for the heavy breather ac that a flash would not be necessary.  both of those ac's are high flowing units, capable of supplying more than enough air to an otherwise stock bike.

however, i'm looking at this from my twin cam colored glasses.  according to the hd website, it says that 'all models require ecm calibration for proper installation.'

Yes I have Fullsac CVO 2.0 Power Cores right now.  Waiting on x pipe to be made by Fullsac. Figured I'd put the Breather on now.  But I've been told.  The Heavy Breather won't fit with the lowers on the bike.

Basically by adding the Fullsac cores and adding a Heavy Breather you have done a HD Stage 1, and yes you should install a tuner. As for the heavy breather, HD has a new model that fits the M8 allowing it to fit with lowers. Sadly Fuel Moto shared the flaws of the new design is restrictive vs the Older unit. Don't know if it breaths better the the factory 114 Ventilator or not, have not found any comparisons yet.

Thanks everyone for the input. Bike makes good power. But more is better. I just wanna make the right moves and not do the trial and error thing like I did with my 2010 and waste a lot of money.

There are a couple posts on the new ventilator air cleaner.  When removed the 114 gains 3 hp and 4 torque with no air cleaner at all.  I have yet to see if the new style heavy breather is zero loss like the old one.  Meaning the old heavy breather gave the same hp and torque as no filter.

Mufflers with out changing the head pipe bring no added power on the M8.

Never been a big fan of look of the ventilator ac but really like the 17 version and hate to change it especially since I am putting speakers in the lowers and the new hb design that works with the lowers might not work with the speakers. I certainly don't want to leave 4 hp laying on the table when I finally put on the head pipe and tune. Is it possible to keep ventilator style and change filter? Might be a dumb question and if so I am nor the most mechanical type...

On a heavy bike, 4 HP is huge.  People spend 700 plus to gain only 4 HP and 3 torque.

I do not think a different filter will help the ventilator unless it is much wider.  Part is the sharp angle the air has to turn to get in the throttle body.

Once again Harley's fitment information for the accessories leaves a lot to be desired.  The Heavy Breather for the 2017 is part number 29400263.  The fitment tab says it fits the CVO Limited and the CVO Street Glide.  But there is also a note that says it won't work with bikes that have speakers in the lowers.  Before assuming anything, I guess it would be a good idea to check with the folks at H-D (assuming you can find anyone who actually knows).  Good Luck.

Yes I saw that too.  So I have lowers but no speakers in them.  So according to what they say. They will fit.

Dave, the only place 4HP is a big deal is a lawn mower, a old 8N Ford tractor or a NASCAR restrictor track motor, Never know it on a bike by seat of the pants.
Sorry I just, once again, disagree with you.

Four horsepower on a Stage I bike is approximately a 4% difference.  While it may show up on a dyno, only the most sophisticated buttometer will be able to detect it on the road.  For those who fixate on numbers it might be worth $400, but for someone like me who prefers the simpler look and better access of the Ventilator design, it's $400 I'd rather spend on something else.  To each his own.

Perhaps we should look for one of those old velocity stacks folks used to run on carb bikes, either straight through or with the gravel shield in the opening.  No more worrying about how much restriction the air cleaner is creating. ;)
