Hi, I've been looking to add an old FXR to the '15 Ltd. in my garage. I just figure it would be fun to ride and I'd get one old enough (and in good enough condition) to earn a collector plate. The collector plate would allow me to save a LOT on the crazy insurance prices we pay for bikes out here.
After looking at a lot of ads across NA over a pretty long time I somehow settled on an FXR4 located about 4300 km away (they just don't seem to show up for sale much locally). Luckily I had a brother-in-law fairly local to the bike and he was able to complete the transaction for me. Of course now comes the logistics of transporting it across the country, registering it and the part I'm (sort of) looking forward to...putting her back into stock condition to qualify for the plate.
The to-do list as it currently stands (in rough order):
-put the stock pipes back on (included but may be missing baffles)
-put stock bar and brake lines back on (also included)
-replace forward controls with mids (this looks like it might be challenging and I may need to settle for older model FXR parts if I can find them and if they will fit.)
-replace aftermarket (Kuryakyn) fuel gauge, fuel cap (should be easy as I think these are still items H-D sell), and grips (I think the original ones are obsolete so these might be tricky)
-find and install passenger backrest, sissy bar, and side plates (I'm not too worried if I do or don't get to this one)
Anyway on top of the above I expect to replace the tires as they are obviously old. I haven't had an opportunity to look at the belt, engine mounts etc. (fingers crossed).
It will be a journey for sure. I just hope the great price I got that led me to look to the FXR4 from older pre-CVO, higher milage FXRs doesn't get wiped out by buying parts to get the bike where I want her.
Wish me luck (I may need it).
