With 299 miles on our new 107, it was time to crack the chest and replace the stock bumpstick with Harleys SE 447. No adjustable pushrods for me, so off came the rocker boxes. What a fun job to get the oil lines off the top off the motor. Oil hemorrhaging everwhere, rags, cussing. I would like to watch the guy who designed this mess actually try to work on it. One pull on the dyno and all is forgotten. Huge 12 HP gain on top making more power from 2600 up. Very slight 3 pound TQ loss at 2K, but we're still making a 100 ft pounds at 2200, hard to complain. Looking at re testing all of our exhaust combinations today to see what works best with the new SE 447 Cam.

Much nicer cam chest to work on than the TC motor. Only one inner cam bearing. No inner chains, no C Clip to shoot across the room. Only one cam tensioner and its mounted on the outside of the plate. Very easy to inspect and replace when needed. The plate pulled off and left the cam and oil pump in place, too easy. I didn't check to see if the lifters will slide out the bottom? Next time.

Steve did you happen to measure crank run out while it was tore down? Just curious...

I was afraid  :'(. Lol... I didn't see any of the tell tale wear signs in the cam bore in the plate so I let it go. I was on a mission
to get it back on the dyno same day.

Gotcha... was just interested in what a stock low mileage M8 would show.

Steve, I got the same results with my M8. Wonder why they call the 447 a torque cam?
That said, wonder what the theory of the "hp" cam is all about??

Horsepower numbers sell parts!

TTS will save us shortly with a couple of good grinds. Lots of testing going on.   :2vrolijk_21:

What tuner was used after the cam change? Also, my local dealer said the moco has a sensor that triggers a dash idiot light if the Cat is removed. Any truth to that?

I agree, HP sells parts.  Torque is more fun every day on the street, especially on a heavy bagger.

My wife has never noticed a change going from a 96 inch bike to a 103.  However going from a 103 Road Glide (with fullsac exhaust, TTS, Heavy Breather) to a stock 107 road glide, her first comment was you did not tell me this bike had more power taking off.

I sure will be following your testing.

I always use TTS Mastertune.

Remove the cat and the idiot light comes on? If I had a circus that's the first clown I'd hire. There is no sensor in the exhaust  to provide any information to the ECM about the actual presence of the cat. The 02 sensors are up stream from the cat, and even if they were behind the cat, they only read oxygen content, not hydro carbons. Sorry, total BS. If the day comes that they put a 5 gas analyzer on the bike, then we have problems. :'(

The after cat o2 sensor can indeed be used for detecting a missing or non functional cat.
"If both sensors show the same output or the rear O2 is "switching", the computer recognizes that the catalytic converter either is not functioning or has been removed, and will operate a malfunction indicator lamp and affect engine performance."

Just curious, what change in AFR takes place after the passing through the cat, specific to a Harley Davidson motorcycle?

The following is NOT about HD, only about catalytic converters (CC):

CCs use the extra oxygen in the exhaust to react with nitrogen oxides (NO) and any unburned hydrocarbons (HC).  The NO is converted to nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2); the HC is converted to carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).

Since the oxygen is converted in the CC, the amount of O2 after the CC is reduced.  IIRC, autos have O2 sensors both upstream and downstream of the CC to monitor the functioning (or removal) of the CC.

The dealer that told Pan1 there's a sensor might be one of those who are also a car dealer, and he's assuming there's another O2 sensor downstream, same as in cars.  Those who work on HD motorcycles know that's not correct, but it's easy to see how a GM or owner doesn't know.
