Has anyone had their stock seat redone with gel/memory foam?
« on: November 24, 2016, 10:12:20 PM »

We have a 2006 FLHTCUSE with the stock seat (built-in heating).  It gets a bit uncomfortable after about half an hour so we were thinking about replacing the seat but I have heard about several companies that modify the seat & install a layer of gel/memory-foam.  I like the idea of keeping it 'stock' so I was wondering if anyone here had done it or seen it done on a friend's ride.
Thanks!

Had Bob rework the last 4 bikes I've owned with OE seats, does great work... he's a forum member here too.

Have a freind that had gel added to his seat. It is not a heated seat.
He wasn't very happy with it.
Day time in the summer was fine, but early and late season riding when our temp swing forces you to gear up, the seat becomes hard until the gel warms enough to soften.
So keep that in mind and ask about what the temp is that the gel becomes stiff.

Yep, that's the downside of gel, Alligator Bob uses pro pad exclusively for that reason

I have had several done and all were ProPad and I had them install the units @ either Daytona or Myrtle Beach during events. They do a nice job, this being the only brand I have dealt with but the pad is sandwiched between the lower foam that came in the seat which is cut out in the shape of the pad and then covered with another piece of foam on top of the gel then the seat cover. Not sure if you could feel the temp of the pad from the seat ever??? But this is not something I have ever felt.
I have had MANY people say "this is no softer than the normal seat", remember the gel is to absorb vibration and conform to your butt, not be soft.

If your going to have a custom seat made, Russell is by far the best I've had.

I'm very particular with seats and my C&C Fastback re-done by Astech Seats works for me. I'm going to have my Le Pera 2  up seat re-done by them too.

The C&C is a thin seat by design but way more comfortable then it has the right to be, thanks to the Astech mod.

They do things a little different. They add a gel pad on top of the seat pan, then add various density memory foam on top.

I agree 100%. Just got my first Russell seat this spring after being a Corbin customer for 20 years. (10 seats or so)

Russell is not the best looking seat but by far the most comfortable. Riding to Sturgis this year, from Detroit, I spent over 10 hours a day in the seat and it was like sitting in my car!  Could easily have done more riding in a day as far as the seat goes.

If your going to have a custom seat made, Russell is by far the best I've had.

Astech did mine at Daytona 3-4 years ago.  The gel they put in is fine, but the stock foam that is left around the edges has started to crack and break down....
