I took my family there for vacation last August and we all absolutely loved it! Not to be a contrarian to other posts on this thread but the vibe and pace of the city we thought was awesome. So much to do and see, American history around every corner and OMG the food!! People of every color, size, shape, ethnicity, sanity made for the greatest people watching of all time.
I get we were only there for 1 week but we all talk about it all the time and though My wife and I are way to old to move, my 3 kids who are all in their 20's now talk about living and working there often. Of course I would hate for any of them to move across the country but after after our trip if I was in my 20's I would love to live and work there so I get them.
Would I want to ride my bike in the city? Hell no! Would I want to be in that mass of humanity on New Years eve? Hell no! With that being said once you get out of the city the possibilities of where you could ride would be endless. New Years eve in Times Square I am way to old for (and have to pee way to often..) but day before or after? Hell yes...

CVOJIMMY
It is like any other huge metropolis is has it's characters, except New Years in NYC is probably the top destination in the US. Many people are haters of New York and Boston etc. they may have their reasons, however, those are not your experiences and or desires. If you want to be in New York City on New Years Eve, this is America, you should be in NYC enjoying New Years Eve and take the natural precautions you would take any where else, because Times Square will be protected better than the malls you shop at during this holiday season.

I was there twice for fleet week in the USN, and once while stationed in NJ.

Dirty nasty city.  Rude people.  Way to many people, way to expensive.  They make you pay to get out of the city.

I have been there to many times.  Do not plan to go back.

I have been to NYC a number of times and love it!  Used to go regularly to watch the Jets play the Dolphins and later just for the fun of it.  Never been there at New Year though.

Mostly by car/truck, but also love riding into the city.  Something special to be riding over the bridge looking out at the Statue of Liberty and the skyline of Manhattan.

One time we rode to South Carolina on our way to meet friends at Americade (go figure?), and on the way north I convinced my wife to ride into New York for lunch at the Harley-Davidson CafĂ©, only to find out it had closed 4 months earlier!  I still vividly remember looking in my mirror and seeing my wife on her bike surrounded by a sea of yellow cabs.  Amazing sight that I just missed getting my camera out on time to capture, but it is burned into my memory.

Going counter to the crowd. I have visited NYC twice in the last 4 yrs. Saw JoMo both times.

2012 - Thanksgiving (4days). Stayed at the Hilton on 6th Ave, watched the Macy's Parade march by in front of me. It was spectacular. Went to the 911 Memorial, visited Deli's and saw "Wicked" , wife and I had a great time.

2014 - Christmas (a week). Stayed at the Millenium Hilton near Memorial and Battery Park. Visited the 911 Museum, Liberty Island. Then went up to Broadway area at the Hilton Garden Inn. Saw 2 Musicals, 3 plays and ate at a number of great restaurants. Had Christmas Brunch at Bryant Park Grille, went to Top of the Rock and visited Chelsa Market where the Cooking channel is located.

Dirty? Not like it was back in the 70's
Expensive? Yea, and so it California, Chicago, Key West and a ton of other destination locations.
Rude People? Not my experience. I would everyone to be fun and accommodating and even made new friends.
Lots of People? Yup, but that is to be expected.

So, while it might now be everyone's cup of tea or 'shine, I found it exciting, new and different. I am sure I'll return to NYC (Manhattan) again.
