DD7 or 117...?
« on: December 07, 2016, 01:05:00 PM »

While asking on a previous post about the 117, many came back with some positive thoughts on the DD7 trans.

Which would make the most sense, if you were to choos only one?

My 110 has a new valve train, black ops lifters, adj. pushrods and cams.  It is quiet and smooth.

So, my thought would be to add the Baker and keep motoring.

Tell me more.  Thanks

Kinda apples to oranges IMO.
A 117 is a hp and tq improvement and a DD7 may give you "feeling" you have a bit more power.
The more power you have the fewer gears you need.
Ever wonder why top fuel cars don't have 5,6,7,or 10 gears? They only have 1 or 2 at the most.
Is that because they have 8,000 hp and don't need more gears?

That's kinda apples and oranges too IMO 'Never seen a Top Fueler running from coast to coast, or in the mountains for that matter, not much luggage space on the TF either...

A better question might be; "Why did Chevrolet put 7sp manual or 8sp auto transmissions in the 650 HP Corvette Zo6??"

Bob, just curious? How many miles do you have on a DD7 or a 117???

Personally I'd rather have the 117".

IMHO, 117 plus and $200 game changer sprocket.  Poor man's DD7!

I went with the 117. Could not be happier with my choice

hmm.. gearing vs horsepower?? hmmm   its not always clear.   more gears allows a smaller engine to do more because it can be kept right in the sweet spot easier. lots and lots of hp and torque will in fact make it so only a few gears are needed, but, the same actual measured performance can be achieved by having better gearing.   i "plan" on changing gearing when i need a new belt since i never ever use 6th gear, its just way too tall. i could put e enormous engine in the bike or just change the gearing.

The DD7 has the same top gear ratio as the Cruise Drive 6-speed, 1:1.  What you get with the DD7 is a lower first gear and then supposedly better steps between ratios up to that 1:1 top gear.  So you should see improved bottom end acceleration from a standing start, but I seriously question spending the big pile of cash Bert gets for that DD7 compared to just changing the crank sprocket which will also improve standing start performance AND will also make each gear including 6th more responsive.  A further bonus is you have to make one less shift.

Unless you plan to do a full engine build including the bottom end, adding cubic inches to an already marginal engine would not be my first choice.  I'd suggest before spending the big bucks you just go with the lower cost crank sprocket kit and see if that solves your perceived performance issues.  A lower ratio (higher numerically) also has the added benefit of less strain on that bottom end I mentioned previously btw.

JMHO - Jerry

I forgot to mention the name of the kit and the price.  It's called the Rivera Game Changer compensator sprocket kit, and pricing runs from $190 to $220 on the various sites I've seen.

A lot of great replays, thank you.  I honestly see all your points which is why this is interesting.
Going for both over a two year period is likely but just trying to see from rider experience, which makes better sense.

It is too bad the 110 isn't the motor to really build but just a set of 117 jugs and pistons probably isn't too much strain on the crank for normal street application.

I have a RAM ecodiesel with 8 speeds.  That little 3.0 diesel is much stronger b/c of that tranny.
That is my rationale for leaning Baker.  It also reduces NVH and there is no fuel economy dip.

You can also get them for less than the $2795 you see advertised.

Thanks!!

I went with the 117 build.  140 torque is very nice.

As for the the Corvettes, the have so many gears for MPG, after 4th they are overdrives.  Not much acceleration in 6th unless your triple the speed limit.

how will the game changer sprocket affect starting?

it looks to me like it requires one of the new compensator assemblies plus the game changer.. its tempting but about the same prices as changing the final drive, but it makes the starter work harder.

id sure like to have the crystal ball to see which future is the better one.

Do both, or stay home. LOL
I agree with most of whats been said, but when putting down extra torque, the Baker trap door, bearings etc. will stand up to increased power, Harley's slush box 6 just won't take the strain of repeated hard riding. Some build potent motors but only occasionally really use it, for those the stock 6 might be OK.

Have a customer with a reworked 120, we call it a 124r. He can strip third gear on a hard roll-on. Just my observation.
