Simple garage door opener
« on: December 19, 2016, 01:40:41 AM »

I didnt want to go through the whole process of installing the HD garage door opener when I got my Roadglide 5 years ago and on this forum I saw where someone had velcro'd a regular opener to the lid of the glove box. I did that and it has worked perfect since so when I got my new Street Glide a couple of months ago I came up with a similar answer. I got a "keychain opener" when I  installed my opener years ago though I had never used it. I took out the foam piece where the phone goes and velcro'd the little opener to the top left side so my iPhone 6S would still fit. Works great! Thought I would share to return the favor.

That is a good idea. My garage door opener worked fine from the one built into the bike until I moved and the new house has a more secure kind that isn't compatible. So I have been back to putting the open in my pocket. This may be a way to avoid that and keep it protected as well. Thanks for the idea.

The HD one can be made to operate the new "more secure" or digital openers. Do a search on here or one of the other forums. I did it and it only took a short amount of time. MUCH easier and safter to just push the flash to pass on the handlebars and watch the door open.

If one knows how to solder it's pretty easy to make the Harley system work with one of the more recent garage door openers.  It basically involves running the wires from the Harley receiver NOT to the door opener motor unit, but to the smart wall switch.  You locate the two contacts for the actual open/close switch on the circuit board and solder the Harley receiver wires to those contacts.  There are also solutions you can buy that utilize the MyQ system of the Chamberlain opener, but the simple solution mentioned earlier is free and only takes a short time to route and solder the wires.

Another alternative I've used is to mount one of the door opener's own transmitters in the bike, in my case inside the fairing, add a SPST pushbutton switch to the location of your choice, and then solder two wires to the circuit board of the transmitter and route to the pushbutton switch.  In other words, similar to what Alan posted but adding a remote switch to eliminate having to open a glovebox door to operate the opener.

As always, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

I bought my CVO and didn't receive the receiver for in the garage. I found a receiver
that has a rolling code on it that works flawlessly. and only was 15 bucks shipped to my door.

Or you can replace the smart controller on the wall with a regular switch. Then the us opener will work

This is not the company I got it from but this is the same unit. Plug it in and run the 2 wires, works great. Alot better then the 90 MOCO wants for theirs.

My GD opener failed a few months after I installed the HD opener. When the tech came out he said I had voided the warranty by installing a peripheral opener. I sent him away, removed the HD opener and called again a couple of weeks later. The main control board was fried in the opener, they replaced it under warranty and the tech, different guy, told me he had replaced hundreds of them.

Still haven't connected the HD unit back up, may try feeding to the wall switch just to be safe.  :nixweiss:

Did this on my '08 Ultra, worked great and amazed a lot of people.  But since the '16 came with its own, I will use the HD for now.
