Thoughts
« on: December 27, 2016, 09:27:31 PM »

I have not been on the site for quite awhile so I apologize in advance if I am bringing up an old topic.   I have a 13 CVO Ultra with 36,000 miles on it.     I upgraded to Progressive suspension front and rear and have V&H Power Duals and Monster Ovals on it.    I am considering putting the 117 kit in my bike but wonder if I would be better off putting that money towards the new CVO?   My dealership of course says go new.  I know I will take a beating on the trade, so has there been enough changes to justify the cost?

It's too early to know much about durability/reliability, but the posts I've read around here so far from guys who bought the 17's seem to indicate much better engine operation with the new M8, and a much better suspension.  You might want to have that dealer set you up with an extended test ride to see for yourself if it's better than what you have now.

I have had several 110 CVO bikes, around 155,000 miles between them.  I have 7,000 mies on a Milwaukee 8 CVO Street glide now.

The M8 is a much smoother and quieter motor.  It produces more torque down low.  I am very happy so far with the new motor.  Only time will tell if it is more reliable than the twin cam it replaces.  I do not think it will be any worse for sure and may have better reliability.

The rear suspension is improved, and the front suspension is greatly improved.

Given you have a pre-Rushmore bike, the difference will be night and day, IMO. I'm keeping my 2015 for a few more years, but only because it has many of the benefits already.

I traded my 2010 Ultra CVO for my 2017, no regrets so far.  The 114 has much better TQ at lower RPM which makes the power band more user friendly.  Less engine noise, smoother shifting.  You have already upgraded your suspension, do not think you will find anything wrong with the suspension on the 2017 compared to your Progressive 2013.  Passenger has a bit more room.  Especially like the newer closures on the saddlebags & tour pack. Linked brakes are also a big plus.

Correct, trade in on a 3 year old bike you will take a beating.  Good advice in this thread already - test ride the 2017.  Put it through it's paces.  If you like the 2017 can see what the trade deal offer is & decide yes/no after that. Everyone I know who has done the 117 upgrade likes it a lot.

My biggest downside on the new bike is the GPS not being as user friendly as my older Garmins.  Was not a deal breaker for me, knew this going in.  Stock sound system is a big improvement over what I had prior - had swapped out speakers for Boom ones  already on the 2010 since the stock ones on that bike were so-so.

I traded a 2013 CVO road glide for the 2017 CVO street glide. No regrets and Not looking back...I did take the SESG in for the 117 upgrade.

I say go for for the new bike if at all reasonable.  Typically I like to keep my vehicles for the long haul and this includes my H-Ds.  I didn't intent to trade my '12 for a '17 but after its second engine failure (and my fourth 110 engine failure) I decided to go for it and I certainly don't regret it.

As iski stated the on-board gps leaves a bit to be desired but I cured that in short order with a Garmin Road Tech Zumo 590.   :2vrolijk_21:

As always some great advice here, I have had really good luck with my 13 but sometimes you just have to let go and take a chance.  I greatly appreciate everyone's input

Have you made a decision?  Just curious.

My 13 is not going anywhere.....it's paid for!

I have not a solid decision yet.  Weighing the options, they will give me $20,000 for mine, due to the miles it's probably in line.  Considering my options, $42,000 for a new CVO is well, pricey.  Will ride a Ultra Limited and consider a stage 2 upgrade.

2 questions-how much do you ride? Can you afford it? If the answer is often and yes, no brainer. New bike is fantastic!

Update:
I pulled the trigger on a 2017 Ultra Limited, I am having the Stage III 114 kit installed along with V&H Hi Outputs and some chrome.   I will miss the CVO and many of the amenities but just was not in the financial cards at this time.  I will still lurk here in the shadows to keep up on the everyone and their rides.  Ride safe everyone
