2015 CVO what cam to go with
« on: January 01, 2017, 10:46:06 PM »

I bought a 2015 CVO street glide that had some mods to the engine .At 12000 kms it had a lifter fail. 2 needle bearings came out of one and went  through cams and oil pump. Warranty covered the repair but they put the stock cams back in (se 255) instead of the Andrews cams. Not 100% sure but I think they were 48's  . The bike needs a different cam but not sure what to put in. The dealer whats 8 hrs labor to dyno and tune which I feel is a lot to pay to have to do it all over when I change the cams again . Thinking of going with SE 585's but would appreciate some advice .

Mods are

VH power duals with high output slip ons
58 mm throttle body
SE high capacity lifters
se pro tuner

There are lots of variables in selecting a cam.  Compression being one.  Head work another.  Also are you looking for HP, or torque?  What is the RPM range you normally ride in?

GMR 577 works very well with your mods. If you add 10.5 pistons even better.

The SE 585 has been an excellent performer for me (don't confuse this with the S&S 585).  With dyno tune was able to achieve 118 torque and 109 HP with only the Fullsac DX (2.0 cores) and TTS tuner--no headwork, compression increase, etc.  Oh, I did change the sprocket to a 31T.  Very pleased with the entire package.

It's due to that great tune Joe did  ;D

This ones' worth looking into also...http://www.zippersperformance.com/all-products/engine-transmission/cam-chest-valve-train/red-shift-587-cams.html
but it comes all down to the tune, some great mild to wild builds out there with a average at best tune & it'll have you scratching your head.

Has anyone done a drop in and tune SE-585 lately?  I am having this done and will report back.  If money were  no object, building power with the right combination would be easy.  It is when you have to stair step the process that makes the cam choice a challenge.

I plan on adding 10:2 cvo heads in the future.  I know many cams like that number in the cvo 110.  Starting with 9:2 with a particular cam and then adding compression does not work with many cam choices.

I must be blind.  I don't know how I missed the above.  Thank you.  I will report back soon on my results.

The hardest thing to compare is the different dynes out there.  I started at 82/93 added 2-1-2 FM and TTS 100s.  Ended at 95/109.

I am hoping to get maybe 5/7 with 585s.

Warranty covered a failed lifter with Andrews cams and all of your aftermarket stuff?
Awesome! That's a good dealer!

Your compression choice is a bit like measuring with a micrometer marking with chalk and cutting with an axe. Arbitrary. Cams and their intake close mostly dictate the ideal mechanical compression ratio.

HD Street Perf,

I wish you were not in WA and I in FL.  Your recommendations as I have followed your posts over these past few years seem sound.  Living in a smaller town without anyone to work on the bike except the dealer is limiting for sure.

I replaced the TTS 100s with the SE 585s and ended up with similar numbers.  I did not alter anything else but plan to in the near future.

Does this seem logical on the cam swap and the numbers?  I would have thought with the additional lift of the 585 cam, the numbers might have been greater.

Cam choices often time get made using lift as the primary factor. Lift is part of the equation but duration, overlap, and lobe separation and lobe center locations are also very important. In your case the change to the SE585 was rather benign. Both cams are short torque designs and not that much different. I would not expect a big shift. Adding compression would help the SE585 but that has a limit. 10.2 would be ideal. Now to be sure you have a true 10.2 you will need to CC and mill and match the head chambers. I have see the CVO heads with 93 to 97cc and have sample well over 100 sets. They are not always matched either. BTW my stock 110 with Fullsac DX pipes made 100/109 with that cam, only a .030 head gasket and valve spring change. I pulled it and went to an Andrews 54 to cull intake noise, about the same result. Good enough for me.

at 10.2-1,the fuelling .574 or S&S .570 would be good choices.ide bump the compression now and install cams you`ll actually feel as opposed to just settling on whats available for the lower compression

Great help.  10:2 is what I was thinking.  Bike runs good but not a drastic change.  Upper band is stronger with the 585s.  Thinking 117 kit and the mild head porting next.  I knew as you all have said, the TTS 100s were too small.
