Cam bolt
« on: January 12, 2017, 11:46:27 PM »

Doing a cam change on the 09 and as I am reading through the service manual it is say to replace the bolts that hold the cam sprockets to the crank and the cam. I have to run by the dealer tomorrow and pick up a couple different spacers, so I can get bolts then if needed. Are you all changing them and why if so.

Thanks
David

I think the reasoning is that the thread locking adhesive, such as Vibra Tite VC3, is one time use. Plus it is just good business to sell parts. Wire wheel the bolts and clean with brake cleaner and then they are ready to use your favorite thread locker brand.

Thanks Don. Blue Loctite with primer would be my choice there.

One other question for you guys.

The primary cam tensioner is held in place with 2  1/4-20 button head Torx, is there enough clearance in there for me to use a regular socket head allen bolt.

Clean the stock cam bolts, red Loctite 25 lbs., and 35 lbs. on rear cam gear. Use the proper # 27 Torx socket on the tensioner, or 2 button head allen bolts the same length as the Torx.
I don't use Loctite on the front tensioner bolts. I use blue on the rear tensioner.

Thank you John. I did use blue on the rear.
Hopefully I warms up enough tomorrow that I can finish the cam up, make sure it still runs and get ready to do the top end.

Hows the weather doing in Florida?

They are cheap enough, why take a chance.  Besides, the old one can be a spare bolt in case you lose the exhaust crossover (at least on my headers).
