Engine oil hickup!
« on: January 31, 2017, 10:28:08 AM »

Here's a good one, l was checking the motor oil level and it was down (the link shows before and how much went in) before I realised I had inadvertently put 2 stroke of the same brand and synthetic oil in.
Q. Would anyone know if the amount between the pointers that went in, being 2 stroke will cause a problem?

From the pic, 1 qt is the length of that bar so you look about 1/6 of it.

It isn't supposed to hurt it too bad but if I did that to my bike I'd just change the oil to be safe.

What is meant,....(hurt it too bad) ?

The bike is my only means of transportation. If l run it will that 2 stroke oil contaminate the oil as it mixes .
I have to use the bike to go get new oil .

There's no detergent in 2 stroke oil - it's supposed to burn clean when its mixed. But you'll be fine for a hundred or so miles.

Just for conversations sake let's say you put 6 US ounces of the 2 stroke oil in, if you had 4 US quarts in there that would make the 2 stroke oil less than 5% of the total in there.  I wouldn't recommend leaving it that way but -. And here's my disclaimer - if it were MY bike and my only form of transport - I would ride down to the store and purchase the correct oil and filter and bring it home and change the oil. Heck I would probably change it again after running it for a few hundred miles to "flush" that 2 stroke stuff out. I'm under the belief that the 2stroke stuff is thinner and probably has different additives than what you want in the engine.

The best and most cautious thing to do would be ask a buddy to give you a ride to the store and stop to pick up a fee beers for you both to drink while you let the oil drain .

I've mixed different grades of 4 Cycle/Stroke oil in my HD's on occasion when traveling but when that happens the oil gets changed as soon as possible.

Cheers for the input,
I think maybe 2 ounce went in. I have to ride it to get new oil unfortunately . My main concern was running it

Short term it's no problem.  Long term, two stroke oil is meant to be consumed so it doesn't have the additives found in four stroke oil to prevent sludge, acid, etc.  In this case a few ounces isn't likely to cause any problems.

Thanks Jerry and everyone for the input.
I just didn't know what reaction the 2stroke would have with the 20/50 like I said it was about 2 or 3 ounces at most that went in.
I feel better about firing it up . Oil change ASAP :2vrolijk_21:
