Deutsche connectors
« on: February 17, 2007, 04:48:44 PM »

Where do you buy these babies? I bought a harness from HD for the tour pack and spoiler and interior light. I stood there looking at the wire ends with the metal tips and the Deutsche connector and thought, Oh chit, I gotta cut these wires and solder and this and that and then all of a sudden I stuck that thing through and clip and son of a bitch, thats slicker 'n frog hair! Now I  need a two connector one and a three and I'm in business. Does radio shack carry them? Auto parts stores?

The dealership's often have a decent supply of connectors and terminals.  Auto parts stores can be very hit and miss.  If you've got time to order then check Waytek.  A good source for nearly all things auto-electrical and damn near everything else too.

We use these connectors on Caterpillar equiptment. I have a complete kit on my truck. You can go to Empire in Mesa and pick up what you need. The crimping tool is pretty exspensive, the connectors aren't bad.

I think it is about $150 or so.  REAL expensive.

You can get them at :http://www.deutschconnector.com/ or sometimes complete kits (w/pins, etc.) can be had at a decent auto supply house that carries good electrical stock. Crimper isn't really needed for the normal tasks, but do recommend using the service manual for the connector info.

I've spent some serious dough for tools, but I dont think I"m spending a buck and a half for a crimper that I'm gonna use twice. Thats chrome money. I'm going to see if I can get the connectors part numbers from the moco. Hey, JR do you have a electrical parts book that shows the harness in your tour pack? I need the connectors for the spoiler and the light.

You might check a equipment rental store they may have this tool you can rent for a day for a few dollars. :nixweiss:

Those connectors are not Deutsch, but instead AMP MULTILOCK.

The part numbers you are looking for are:
73153-96BK - 3-place male plug  (Main Harness)
73191-96 - Socket teminals (3)

73103-96BK - 3-place female socket (TP harness)
73190-96 - Pin terminals (3)

73152-96BK - 2-place male plug (TP harness)
73191-96 -Socket teminals (2)

73102-96BK - 2-place female socket (Main harness)
73190-96 - Pin terminals (2)

The crimper for the MULTILOCK pins and sockets is of course different than the crimper for the Deutsch.

Hope this helps,

Chief

So you gotta have a crimper to make the pin ends that slide into the connector. OK< now what are my other options? I mean other than straight solder connections.

I would look for a supply house that sells MULTILOCK connectors, and see if they will crimp them for you, or they might have a tool rental option.

An ugly solution is barrel connectors, but I don't like that.

Maybe someone on the board has a MULTILOCK tool.

Sorry I don't have the silver bullet.

If you break down and decide you just have to buy a tool, and you think you might be working with the M-L and the deutsch connectors at some time, there are crimp tools with multiple dies to work with different kinds of terminals.  Spend a little more up front to get a tool that covers all the bases.

You can buy those connectors and terminals at the bike shop though.  Talk them in to making the crimps for you.

My HD dealership had the multilock connectors, he didnt what a crimping tool was, he pulled out some accessory catalog and showed me a deutsch crimper that was 400 bucks! I'm going to solder and shrink wrap them and be done with it. My tour pack lid organizer will cover my handiwork anyway. I dont expect I will need to remove the cover from the tour pack anyway, I have both the chopped and king now. I like soldering anyway. My buddy called my electrical work a "Monkey Fist" when I did the connections on my heritage headlight nacelle.  :P  I'll be ok.
