Vodied warranty
« on: February 25, 2017, 08:39:31 PM »

Back last fall after the EPA slammed on HD and they quit selling the SE tuner. Has anyone had any work done to their bike and then later had a warranty claim denied because the emissions system is no longer stock?

I have been wanting to go the Fulsac route on my 16 CVO but I am afraid I will have lifters fail at 15,000 miles and HD will say there is no warranty because I removed the cat and had it tuned. That is not a very pleasant thought and has kept me from pulling the trigger on this upgrade.

Any input from anyone with personal experience? Or has anyone talked to any dealers to get what they are saying about this?

I believe this is more of an issue with the 2017 bikes, as that is where the EPA suit came in.  Most dealers were not worrying about 2016 and earlier bikes.

I know several who had motors replaced due to lifter failures on 15's and 16's.  They had fullsac head pipes, muffler cores and a TTS tuner.

Dave is probably right, but you might want to see if you can get some sort of official word from someone at H-D.  Or do some research on the EPA suit against H-D and the actual wording of the settlement agreement.  It has always been illegal for them to do or condone illegal emissions system tampering, even before the latest EPA action, and there never was a guarantee they wouldn't void your warranty due to illegal mods.  Some got repairs made under warranty, some did not.  As with most things H-D, it was a crap shoot.

If you are mainly worried about the lifter failure issue, do as many others have and just change them out every 10k to 15k miles.

Re install the cat and un tune it. It's not a big deal.
If we are talking about a failed lifter, that's a serious engine i$$ue. Why take a chance on being denied? Take a couple hours, bolt the stock headpipe back on. Then take another 10 minutes and flash the stock calibration back in the ECM. If the engine is still running but knocking real bad, hold it wide open until the knocking stops. Now your ready to take it in.

Fine and dandy if you break down close to home but if your not, having it towed home may not be an option.

Everyone has there own set of fears when it comes to warranty's and traveling far from home. Everyone has to do what their comfort zone allows. When I'm traveling I refuse to worry about it. If you break down its part of the adventure. 7 Harleys in 13 years, I have only been stranded once,  but 800 miles out. The closest dealer couldn't get the part for 5 days. Warranty or not, the dealer was useless. Would of had me parked for a week in the middle of nowhere. There was another option. It was a small U haul Van. We pushed the broken Harley in the back and we continued our trip and only lost one day. Riding Harley's is about relaxing and de-stressing. You can't over think it. It will suck the fun out of it.

Rule of thumb for me?  If worried about warranty issues, wait for it to expire before making any motor and/or warranty concern changes. You know you can't go wrong taking that path.
Mine runs out end of July this year and I've talked to Steve at Fullsac along with Dave on some of our local, East TN tuners in preparation of that day.  I may not do anything but I know what's available post warranty.
Yes, you can bring everything back to stock as suggested. If you take long trips, that's a just concern.
Just something to consider.

three Harley's since 1979   the first two i rode over a hundred thousand miles. one of them i rode in mexico and canada....   mexico on a harley was a trip... i was too young and stupid to know what a risk i was taking.

i worry a lot about doing anything that will break the bike, when i do any maintenance i look at what will make it more reliable.

unfortunately I hardly ever go on trips any more, don't ride much anymore, am going to keep the bike i have till i drop dead or win the lottery. this site is one of the best for finding info on durability. what mods cause huge problems, what mods make things last a long time. what parts to really watch. i can think of several times over the years where having this info when i was younger would have saved me a LOT of headaches  (and bux)

what I've learned:   - most of the time bone stock is the most durable - but - lifters, valve springs, main & rod bearings, seals, parts like that - use the highest quality parts you can find - often stock is best part - but not always.. s&s sells really good quality parts.  gearing is more important than a hopped up engine. tires are more important than anything.

I don't know about that? lol..
I do know the most memorable trips are the ones that didn't go as planned. Rain, snow. Hotels are booked because its raining and snowing! Oops, wrong turn about 80 miles back. Where the hell are we? Those are the rides you always remember and talk about. What do the Marines say? Overcome and adapt! Trample the week, hurdle the dead! Marines have the right attitude for this. Riding Harleys cross country is not for pussies. Good thing, we would be surrounded.

Sad!

I'm one of those I was talking about.  That was a 15.  I also had an 09 that had lifter failure.  110 are hard on lifters.

The 15 I was several hundred miles from home.  I got the bike home, so the dealer I trust could handle the issue.

Made the best of it, traded on the 17.  New owner of my 15 had to brake the new motor in.
