Electrical Engine Problems
« on: February 18, 2007, 05:10:32 PM »

Some of you may recall my earlier postings on a problem I've been having with my B&O CUSE2, engine shutting down while riding.  This happened 4 times before I could get it back to the dealer.  On the first round they inspected and tested everything that could be related to this problem and changed the voltage regulator and TSSM.  I rode about 2000 miles before it happened again.  Cruising along around 75 mph and the engine shuts down.  After about 15 to 25 minutes something resets and engine restarts and runs fine.  This time the MOCO has the dealer replace the the ECM.  Have not been able to ride much for the last couple of months but it's been on a tender and started right up the few times I did take it out.

Finally got out yesterday and rode for about an hour.  Stopped by the house and when I went out to restart, got one loud click on the starter and everything went dead.  Bike went back into the same mode as before when it shut down at speed.  After about 2 hours, the system seems to have reset, with headlights back on, security key indicator flashing, mileage display, etc., but now there is no starter.  No click at the solenoid, nothing.  Checked fuses, pulled master link and reinstalled.  Not sure if there is a separate fuse for the starter, or if security system has the starter disabled?  Went back to dealer and they agreed to call the MOCO on Monday.  They don't have any ideas on where to go from here.  I have requested that the MOCO buy this bike back  :(because of the safety aspect associated with this problem.

I'm kind of torn on this because, problems aside, I really like this scooter.  That's why I've stuck with it through all of this.  In addition to this electrical problem I've had to replace the stereo/nav unit, rebuild the clutch master cylinder, replace the clutch, and replace the left tank badge (separated).  If I can't find another SE, I may have to trick out an 07 Streetglide.  IMHO, this is way too many problems for this expensive a bike.  I'll let you know what happens with the MOCO next week.

Bearammus,
Sounds like a lemon-law case to me.  I don't recall anyone else here having this many/types of problems.
Good luck with the MoCo, man.

Wow... I would push for a new bike. I also think the place to start for those elec problems is right at a defective main system relay. could be a bad one from the get go. my.02 :-\

Bearammus,

I had a similiar problem when I first replaced my wiring harness on my 02 police bike.  Turned out they sent me the wrong amp fuse that goes under the seat in the crevice infront of the battery they sent me a 40 instead of a 45.  Turned out there was also a known recall for the FLH's for this.  It had the same symptoms your speaking of only I didnt have to wait 2 hours just about 20 minutes for the reset.   I would suggest replacing this piece first its only 2 screws and disconnecting the battery.   After replacing it I have never had it happen again.   I am not saying its the problem, but it's cheap to change for the dealer and might just be the answer your looking for.

good luck with it.

That breaker was replaced by the maxi-fuse the model year after the recall Harry.  We (thankfully) don't have them to contend with anymore.

My wife's 2003 Road King had a similiar problem.....dealer repalced the engine speed monitor (Ithink that is the correct terminology) and that corrected the problem.  It has not quite again underway.

MOCO is going to replace bike's wire harness.  One last try!  Anyone out there have any experience with a full harness replacement?  Just not real confident that this can be done without creating fit and finish problems.

Bearammus,

On my 02 police roadking the harness was cut up badly by the police dept. for lights / radio and not worth working with.  I bought a new harness and put it in myself and have had no issues other than the 40amp breaker I spoke of above.   If it is a wiring issue and not some other fault or crossed line it should be cut and dry and not a big deal.

Hope it works out for you.

theres a few stretches of freeway here in cali that I would not want to have a sudden shut down at 80 in the fast lane. Fruitcakes will run you over before they will let you get over to the right 2 lanes.....where the semi's will take you out. Id want a new '07. Good luck.

The harness is no big deal just a lot of work to get it replaced.  The fit and finish would be entirely dependent on the capability and attitude of the tech doing the work.  A good conscientious tech should be able to swap this out and you'd never know it except that it should solve your electrical problems of course.

I would reommend that you get an agreement with the Dealer and the Motor Company that the work will be accomplished and meet your satisfaction or a new bike will be on order.  That's alot of tearing down and putting back together.....but i agree a good mechanic can make it happen.  Good luck.

Got the bike back yesterday.  New ignition harness connector and new main harness installed.  Looks like shop did a good job with the install.  Not much else to change.  I met with the HD service rep and she agreed to take copies of all of my service orders and my request for remedy letter on this to customer relations.  I agreed to give this main harness replacement a shot before pursuing this through legal channels.  Hopefully, that won't be necessary.

I've put on a little over 1000 miles since the harness was replaced with no problems.  I think it may be fixed.  Time will tell.
