2009 FLHTCUSE4 charging problem
« on: March 08, 2017, 10:28:15 PM »

Hello, my 09 SEEG is charging between 15,5 (all accessories on) and 15.8 (all accessories off). Voltage is the same at idle and at 3k rpm. My battery is about a year old and I initially checked the charging system after the battery failed to have enough voltage to start the bike last night, after riding home from work.  I charged the battery overnight before checking the charging voltage. The battery drops to 10 volts during starting. Bad voltage regulator?

How are you measuring the voltage? With a VOM or the volt gauge?

Have you done a load test on the battery?  Could be bad, even if it's only one year old..

Sounds like a bad regulator that has ruined the battery by killing a cell from over charging. Should not be regulating over about 14.5. Cars, bikes whatever should all be around the same. If it's too high it's the regulator. If it's low it's the generator. Compare your bike to a friend's bike, for accuracy. Test should be with digital multimeter to get good accuracy.

Thanks for the confirmation, I was using a digital multimeter and I am going to replace the battery with a gel battery.

Do you really mean a "gel" battery, or do you mean an AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery?  There is a big difference, and real gel batteries are rarely used as starting batteries in vehicles, for several good reasons.

Before replacing the battery you need to sort out the overcharging problem.  If you really meant 15.5 - 15.7 V in your first post, that is too high.  The spec is 14.5 V.  Make sure the regulator is properly grounded; check for a voltage drop or high resistance between the negative post of the battery and the ground wire of the regulator.
