This Backrest really sucks!
« on: February 20, 2007, 08:23:32 AM »

Well, after a full year and 14K miles of ownership, my only real complaint is the backrest. Seems the top of the rest hits me in the small of the back. I've tried bending the bracket, tried shimming, I bent the lower bracket, then I flipped the lower bracket over and drilled new holes for adjustment, all to no avail. I've got it close, but it still has room for improvement. Now, I'm thinking that I might take the backrest to an upolstery shop and have them make it thicker with added padding towards the front. Just curious if anyone has found any secrets to make it more comfy. My previous bike had the HD adjustable backrest and it was way more comfy. This weekend, I traded bikes with a buddy and rode his SERG, which has the adj backrest, and it reminded me just how uncomfortable the CUSE model is.

Thanks, Robert

I added 2 inches to the arms to get it higher on my back and added a bend to it.  Works great now.

Funny you should ask.  I feel the same way about the back rest.  Had a Mustang seat on my Heritage and liked the backrest (very adjustable) much more than this stock set up.  Have not attempted to make the kinds of adjustments you did but I took it off a couple of weeks ago to work on my wiring for installing the saddlebag running lites, and never put it back on.

I have been out riding without it and I certainly do not miss it.  However, I think it comes in handy for the longer rides.  Thinking of having my seat reworked by Daylong and need to check into their back rest.

I went with the larger Classic style backrest.  It offers more coverage and is higher as well as much wider.

Part Number 52914-98, it should do the trick.  Mine is at the upholstry shop getting the ostrich isert or I'd shoot a pic.

Check it out with someone that has one or if your dealer stocks it, see if you could demo one.

When I rebuilt my seat we moved my bracket back an inch and reversed it, which allows the rest to be about two inches further back and then be adjusted to fit.  Seems to work great other than blasting two new holes in the fender.  Also get it just a bit higher as you move it back on the fender.

I'll try for a pic this week if I can get down to the shop, as pointed out elsewhere the "milk dud" is awaiting a new tank set from the paint shop.

So, you're saying you bought the adj HD version with the lever by the gas tank, and then had a shop re-upolster it?

I had thought about a new seat/backrest, but I'll probably trade this bike next year and don't want to make it more of a money pit that it already is.

No its not the lever one, it's just like ours only a larger version.  Still has the spring mount int the bracket and adjust with the screw at the back of the rest.

I installed the optional adjustable rider backrest (with the lever under the seat), and it works great and is comfortable...

It is part of his regular offering.  I know that there is a backrest listed now in the MoCo parts book with the ostrich in it, I'm not sure if it's the big one or not.

This one is the MoCo larger one and he inserted it.  The guy is in Seattle Magoo and he has a SERK.  Also an Ironbutt guy from way back.

He does all kinds of custom stuff and the backrest you could do through the mail.  www.richscustomseats.com

Here's a  :bananarock: that he did.

As follow up to the pics I posted the other day with the backrest of the larger variety, here is the look of the large backrest installed.

And if you are not familiar with the larger backrest, it allows the rest to slide forward to accomodate your leg swing and the dismount of a passenger as well.
