You do not have to stop for tolls on the Florida Turnpike, you can call ahead and register for toll-by-plate and they will just send you a invoice after your trip. I have a Sunpass for Florida so it doesn't apply to me here but I have used the Toll-by-plate in Texas and it works fine. Just do a google search for the Florida Turnpike toll choices and call ahead.
Less congestion on the T/P as well. I live here and I would use the T/P without a doubt.

Thanks for that suggestion.  I'll go back to the website again and see about registering for toll-by-plate the next time I go down there instead of paying $20 for a transponder.  I know in NC the toll-by-plate has a $4.95 fee attached per use.  I hope FL isn't as expensive.

You may be right that a fee is charged for Toll-by-Plate in Florida, that I do not know. And when we used it in Tx they may have charged one there, did not ask. Just know it is nice to buzz thru the booths.
Oh, the Road from just north on San Antonio up towards Waco area that has the 80 MPH speed limit, $4.95 for fee is the least of your charges, Cost about $16.00 best I remember for tolls and you have no choice, No Booths are there. No this has nothing to do with your trip, just idle rambling.

so,instead of a new 17 you're going the opposite direction? what are you looking to get?

'82 KZ1100-D1. Bought one new in 1982 and traded it for a work truck in '85. I hated to get rid of it then but it was a have-to case. I swore if I ever had a chance to get another I would.

You guys talking about Atlanta like it has the plague apparently have not been thru there in the last few years. We go at least once a quarter north and then week later south. The HOV lanes have made this much easier. Went thru @ 5PM couple times, once on Friday. No problem at all. Bikes qualify for this lane, also called diamond lanes. Just be careful and ONLY enter them where they have broken lines, Solid line entry will get you a ticket. We go straight thru Atlanta, never take by-pass. Just stay in the HOV lane.

I agree about the HOV lanes in ATL Don, but most of the time I'm in my work truck by myself and that's not an option. I've spent two + hours during rush hour trying to get through Atlanta. It can be a huge parking lot if you don't hit it right. I've had my wife ride with me on jobs just so I could use the HOV lanes.

Tomorrow's trip is just me with my truck and trailer so no HOV lane. I'm hoping to be south of the airport well before 7AM.

i've owned a kz 900 & kz 1000 (with custom paint job &almost 4k motorwork) they were the bikes back in the 70's. I used to blow suzuki's &yamaha 1100 out the water. guy wanted to run me with a honda 750/4 one day. I laughed & told him to go home & play with his atari. I have a military bud who had 1000 & then a GPZ 1100. that thing handled better & was awesome. then came the ninja's.(wife wouldn't get on one with me)

It has been particularly nasty the last month or so since the I-85 bridge collapsed. Should be open in a few more weeks but for now rush hour is an all day affair in that area.

I think Tom's GPZ was an 82. it seemed to handle better than the z1 & kz models

The Suspension "Tricks" of the era,,, Change to a better Fork Oil, Fork Brace & Boge Mullholland Shocks for the Rear along with the "new"supersticky Dunlops,,,

The '82s handled very well for its day...

Got home at 9:00 this morning. Went through ATL a little before 6AM each way. I was surprised at how heavy traffic was but it was still moving right along. Made the round trip in 31 hours and I was whooped when I got home. Took a nap, unloaded everything and the Kaw is sitting in the garage with the Harleys. I think I might be starting a collection!

I agree but still time it for non rush hour.  Going south we usually hit about 9 am and going north about 2pm.  Even when I plan on going all back roads to Chrystal River FL or Daytona FL, I will hit the interstate a little north of Atlanta and get off just south of Atlanta as there are no back roads around Atlanta that do not have horrible traffic.

Haven't been though since the I-85 bridge issue, but we go thru at least 3 round trips a year.
