SE 110 Cylinder badging color
« on: May 24, 2017, 03:36:22 PM »

When did the black Cylinder Badges start circulating? I'm just trying to understand what I'm looking at as I search for another CVO.

I'm actually out looking around to hopefully help get my brother into a CVO and we are looking at early 110's just for shear price point.  I have noticed during my search when getting my own CVO that it's not easy finding service records on these if they have bounced around from dealer to dealer or swapped hands a couple times.

Basically, what do I need to be looking for when buying an early 110 with no documentation.

I could be wrong but I believe the cylinder badges have always been black but, the cylinder paint color was silver for the first 5 or 6 years then they changed it to granite afterwards.

See attached... that is the color badges I see on many original 2007 and 2008 bikes with factory cylinders.

My 2007 had silver badges when Harley replaced the heads under a service bulletin they also change the badges. They went to black because the silver ones were turning yellowish-brown due to the heat from the heads.

my 2011 was black and granite so, you now have it narrowed to 2009 or 10.

I believe that the "touring bike" cylinder/engine case on 110" motors were granite for the first few years until the '10 kryptonite green bikes, which were blacked out I believe.  And of course '07 was the first year for the 110" motor in all CVO models.  I'm not sure if they ever did a silver 110", but maybe one of the newer models above my pay scale has silver motor/trans.

Those service records you are trying to find would be tough with the bunch I ride with or know. Nobody takes there bikes to the dealer for anything except warranty. Oil changes and similar adjustments are within the ability of about anyone with a service manual and or YouTube.
I have to admit I no longer do my own automotive maintenance but I do enjoy doing the bike, so consequentially my bike has limited or no service records.

Same here, but what I do is keep a pretty accurate log of what I do to the bike by date, mileage, part #s, ect. It wouldn't be official Harley records but sure helps me keep up with the bike

If warranty work was done any dealer can run the V.I.N. for all warranty service that was done, when it was done and what dealership performed the work.

 And B.T.W. 2008 110. Granite motor/black badging

Mine started out silver and then picked it up from dealer one time and they had changed them to black. As was said the silver ones were changing to gold with the extreme heat the motor was putting out.

Only first year were silver.
The powder coat is another topic, varies by model and year.
