MITM 2017
« on: June 05, 2017, 08:02:51 AM »

OK, thought it would be fun to start a group ride report thread so that we could capture the collective experience while traveling to/from the MITM.

Here's my story (so far)...

It was a masterfully planned trip. We had some thunderstorms come through the night before the planned departure, but they were scheduled to be long gone by 8am. The weatherman lied. Weather.com lied. They ALL lied! The storms finally cleared by Noon, leaving the roads wet and steamy. I wanted to make Fort Smith for the night, there is an Indian casino there just begging for me to pick its pockets. Opportunistically impatient, I decided to saddle-up and hit the road.

I made it about 75 miles before I determined the weather radar lied again. Seems the previous storm encouraged other storm cells to join in the fun and there was a whopper of a thunderstorm brewing on the Texas/Oklahoma border. I donned my rain gear and aimed due north towards Idabel, OK. It wasn't five minutes down the road when it broke loose. Luckily, I was at the tail end of a line of traffic, behind a white SUV with LED tail lights, and all parties used extreme caution. Guided by the grace of God and those LED lights, I pulled into a planned fuel stop in Idabel 90 minutes later, where I had some great conversations with random strangers who wished they too could say, "WTF, let's go play in the rain today!" The rain stayed with me for another 20 miles, then the sun decided to help me dry-out a bit.

I got checked into the hotel under the warmth of a beautiful sunny sunset. Great way to close-out Day 1 on the road. But somehow, my $99 room turned into a $169 room after dinner. Well, technically, after sitting at a blackjack table after dinner. Oh well, it was less than my loss limit, so all in fun.

I apparently sprung a leak somewhere around my neck and the rain water had run down my chest and proceeded to collect in the seat of my pants. No worries, the hotel provides a dryer...

Seeing as how the tables were on the way to/from the chow line this morning, I took a chance at earning some of my losses back. Came pretty close to breaking even for the stay, which is a win in my book. The trip over to Eureka Springs required a little dancing with the raindrops, but not enough to gear-up. As always, the Pig Trail is a great warm-up to the days to come.

WARNING: There is one section of the Pig Trail where the road goes down to an unmanned one lane diversion for about 25 yards. The road has collapsed about 3' below the normal road surface, so make sure you slow and watch for oncoming traffic.

Checked-in and watching the bikes roll in!

Well, after a great ride yesterday led by Cat Eye with Mutant playing sweep, I learned of a family medical issue that required me to depart early. So sorry I will miss the road tales at the evening Gatherings and, of course, the Last Supper.

I left this morning and met a nice guy at one of my rest stops. He was the lead trainer for the Barnum and Bailey Circus. He rides a 1979 H-D with a Screaming Eagle engine that has been chopped and, occasionally, his favorite camel. He also has a yak that is a available for adoption, re-homing fee applies.

Home safe and sound after a 380 mile day. 1070 for the trip. Had a blast, albeit a short time at the MITM. Enjoyed meeting everyone. Hope everyone has a wonderful stay in ES and a safe journey home or to your next destination.

Thanks guys. Family medical issue is my father-in-law - looks like he's progressing to the next stage of dementia and has stopped eating. Needed to get back to support my bride and help where I can. I hope today was awesome and you all have a safe journey home.

Really sorry about your FIL, Tim.  Tell Liz she and her family will be in our prayers.  We sure missed you the rest of our stay.   :-\

I would add to your to/from thread, but it only took us 2 hours either way so we didn't take the time to stop for pictures!   :huepfenlol2:
