Would V&H FP3 tuner work on 117 kit?
« on: June 26, 2017, 07:00:52 PM »

Just wondering what your thoughts are on using the FP3 Tuner for 117 kit...seems pretty easy just to set to auto tune and let it build a map on it's own...no need for Dyno?

Auto Tune isn't the magical stuff they make it out to be.  You need to start out with a good base map first, no matter what company's "auto tune" you use.  You might want to talk to some tuning experts before assuming anything.

The short answer is yes it will work. But it will not work 100 percent correctly. The so called autotune is only in the closed loop areas. I have removed numerous of these so called autotune devices and installed and tuned the bikes properly with the TTS and the customers are always amazed how how much better their bike runs. These devices seem to be ok for basic pipe and ac mods but when you do a performance build they fall short. There is no magic bullet to replace a good Dyno tune with a full featured tuning device.

I will give a thumbs up for the FP3 if used as noted by the two previous posts.  I have not used the autotune as of yet because I'm happy with the base V&H map for my mods (which is nothing at this time).  As I've noted in previous threads, I would highly recommend the FP3 for simple changes (air filter, pipes, mufflers) but anything major (cams, heads, etc.) I believe the TTS would be the best choice.

Building a 110 to 117 is not cheap.  To do it right it cost a good deal of money.  Spending the money to do a good 117 build, I would opt for a TTS tuner and a good dyno tune.

My 117 makes great power, has a long flat torque curve and gets 45 or more mpg.  Tuned with TTS, I doubt you could get this with the FP3.  This bike is super easy to ride, and a total blast, runs smoother than stock.

Agreed. I have removed more of these fueling devices than I can count and tuned them with Dynojet Power Vision. The tune license option is very economical and then have the ability to access more of the ECM for a complete and comprehensive dyno tune.

Dave, on your 110" to 117" upgrade, what else did you do to the drive train, clutch, compensator etc?

Added the AIM VP-SDR Performance Kit for A&S Clutch, 3 Studs Style.  Have not done the compensator yet, so far this one seems fine, on like the one in my 09 or my 12 were.

Spend the money on a Dyno tune. I installed the 117" as is with the HD cams and got 120hp/130tq. Rides wonderful! (And a full V&H)

I agree with what multiple guys above said.  I am a FP3 fan for bike that have had only intake and exhaust done.  Since you put a 117 kit on your bike, I would recommend getting a TTS and a professional tune.  I would check with the professional tuners before you spend any money to make sure you're buying the tuner that they are comfortable working with and have experience with.

I'm on my second bike that I used the FP3 on and it works great for what it is.  On our other 4 Harleys that we have had big bore kits or cams done we went with the TTS and a good dyno and got awesome results.
