After 33 years as a police officer, 29.5 which were on a motor, as of yesterday, I'm retired!! It's been a hell of a career, and I'll miss the people dearly. The job? Not so much, as being a LEO over the past several years hasn't been what it once was.
It was difficult to step off my department issued bike for the very last time. It used to be that we would leave the bike at the station and get a ride home. These days, we now ride the bike home (we take it home everyday normally) with the escort by the departments motors. The other motors sign your helmet, and bid you farewell. Another motor then rides your bike back to the station.
A small summary of facts, for those interested:
Miles ridden: ~385,000
Bikes: Kawasaki KZ-1000, Harley FXRP, BMW R1150RTP, BMW R1200RTP, Kawasaki Concours, BMW R1200RTP, BMW R1200RTP water cooled.
Tickets Written: ~37,000
Last ticket written: Cell phone violation, 3 minutes before officially off duty. Very nice woman who told me that she can't afford the ticket as all of her money gets spent on helping her dying mother. I suggested she might want to go to court, as I'm retiring and won't be there.
Favorite part of the job: Getting up every morning and going for a ride
Least favorite part of the job: Riding into work when it was cold, or riding when it was hot/humid.
Parting advice: Ride like you're invisible. Head up, and look where you want to go.
